Roberto Martinez discussion

Or Martinez could be given a couple more windows to strengthen the team.

So this time last season people were fuming over how we were playing and how results were going.

We have 2 points more than we did last season and hardly anything has changed. We may be playing more exciting football but defensively we're shocking and only getting worse just like Wigan did.

People called it a blip, second season syndrome, the players we had (Distin, Alcaraz etc), European hangover it really isn't.

12 months on and it's exactly the same, the players looked knackered after 75 minutes, we have better players and there is no European football to use as an excuse but you can predict how each match will go without even watching it. If average wasters like us know how we're play in a match, how slowly we'll build up, how we'll keep Del out wide, how Kone won't touch the left wing, how Barry is always going to drop when a full back gets the ball then how easy is it for a Professional manager to come up with a game play to stop our attacking threat or cause us problems defensively.

Unfortunately he won't change and this is the way it is, we'd do well to win a cup but we're not getting into the top 4 any time soon.

It's not good for a forum to have a single member monopolising a thread with posting frequency. It's good to see different views...

Without Davek, it would be all the plotters furiously nodding their heads at each others' posts, he is the pro-Martinez lobby at this point. He can hardly just stand by and watch his man get torn apart by the vultures.

Were 6 points off top 4 with a side of developing players and a transfer window to get rid of aquad players and improve.

Top 4 is over to be honest. Let's win a cup. Hopefully jags is back and maybe we should consider selling stones and buy two quality players, a defender and another attacking midfielder who can play on the left

@davek singe handedly brings balance which is good for the forum by @GrandOldTeam doesn't want that as he HATES Martinez more than anyone on here.

I believe in being stable, I dont think Martinez has done anything horrendously wrong. He's given us some great team performances and brought in a lot of exciting talent. On the flip side it's been a while since he's delivered any great team performances, we seem to be making basic errors and show no consistency. For me we've lost too much bite and that starts at the back, not having a goalkeeper who can command his defence, organise and not make basic errors every week is the foundation of any team. I'm not saying the outfield players aren't guilty of this because they are. If we finished mid table and did well in a cup id give him another year. See if he's got the balls to make the changes he needs to. If he doesn't and it's business as usual then I'd look to move on. I know a lot would say that's too long and it's accepting of poor standards and you're more then entitled to have that opinion. For me Martinez has shown enough positive points to warrant the time to see if he can build something special with the talent we have. It's worth remembering that even Gerry himself said he was a major factor in his return. The young players want to play for him and if he can sort what needs to be sorted then he could take those players on to some very special

Looking at his signings for the 1st eleven now and in future:

Galloway, Mori,McCarthy,Barry,Deulofeu,Lukaku hes done really well...

Stopgaps and backup-- Lennon,McGeady,Kone,Robles,Besic hes done pretty poorly.

Changing mid season unless in immediate danger of relegation is usually not sensible. The market of who is available is far smaller and there is no time for a proper preseason.

I've always said a manager needs at least three seasons to show what he can do. For me the end of this season will be quite a pivotal one. Lukaku and Stones will probably be off (dependent on our success) and so will players like Mirallas, Naismith plus the potential retirements of the likes of Hobbert Osman and Pienaar. In short a large squad rebuild could be on the cards. In my mind that would signal the logical end of Martinez's first cycle of an Everton team. The judgement then comes as to whether you think he has done enough to warrant being the person who we trust to carry on. If the second part of the season goes well in the cups and league it would be silly to say he's not that person, if things continue in line with current form then I don't believe he will have shown enough to warrant further support. This is his squad now and he has to show he can be competitive with Everton in the league as a minimum.

All of this is irrelevant anyway as I don't think the board have any minimum standard above not getting relegated.

My master?

No mate. Just not party to your amateur dramatics and need for a scapegoat of a manager who you wouldn't have come out of your cave to attack just a couple of weeks back.

I expect you'll retire to the cave after the next win comes our way.
Its better to be a realist than a dreamer.
Your credibility is out of the window cos you think everything he lays is golden.
5 wins in 17 games with these players is dire.
Only 33% of the poll want him to stay and i bet you have found a way to vote more than once.
Let it go you spend your life praising your master there is a big wide world out there go and live

Hasn't improved the vast majority of the senior pros he has inherited = not much of a coach
No real demonstrable tactical acumen, borne out by extended period of poor results = not much of a tactician
Falls out with several senior pros, including Eto'o and Mirallas, and 2nd half performances invariably worse than first = not much of a man-manager
Doesn't personally negotiate the deals but has identified some excellent signings = move him to Chief Scout?

Cant see us getting in another CB when we have so many other areas to address, unless we go for a 4th choice...

No question about the GK. It stands out like a sore thumb. He has to go.

On the building process issue though: we have to come to some sort of acknowledgment that if you're in the process of moving over to a certain type of play with a clutch of young players with the emphasis on attack, then you're going to see defensive frailty. That's part and parcel of being brave and deciding to be more adventurous. The defence has to be sorted out, certainly. But you could see with the move for Dann last summer that he wanted more character in the defence. I expect him to move decisively on both CB position and GK position in the summer.

You can't hide behind there is no manager better than martinez.
There are loads out there just look at watford for one getting flores.
Whoever we may go for is a gamble

Moyes, Martinez,Flores all gambles with little or no idea on how they would fair when signed
Look at Kooeman last year everybody saying he is superb, but this season he doesn't look as good - I still think a class act.
It is what they try to build and want they bring through the ranks that will be a good measurement, results are vital as well but needs to be balanced against everything.
