Roberto Martinez discussion

He will still come at you, he had me for

1. Thinking Deulofeu would struggle for fitness at start of season due to injury (didn't start a league gave until late September)
2. Thinking Kone wasn't up to it (lot of vaulting needed there)
3. Worried that our style of football wouldn't get us results with our players (how that working out?)
4.Fearing for us this season (justified)
5. needing a few more signings (what a tit I was for thinking that)
he had paragraph after paragraph and a few gifs it must have taken him so long to prove nothing

Oh how I laughed.

TBF, I could see why a man who actively endorsed Steve McLaren for the Everton job might be a tad sensitive to vaulting. Please carry on talking about managers Ian, it's v clear you know your stuff!

Good, he has won the dutch league, won a pot (the only pot) at Boro and got them to a UEFA cup final and Bar England has done a good job wherever he has been unlike Martinez.

And fair play to Kenwright for growing a set if this is true.

I generally like Martinez but I'm becoming less sure that he's up to the job.

There appears to be no defensive learning curve. We have the hottest young defender in world football, two of the best fullbacks in the business with an England international to come back, and South America's best young defender all make up the defence. Essentially, we have one of the best defences in the league and he can't work out how to keep clean sheets.

The players must shoulder some blame though, they're the ones out there, not defending. Have they no minds of their own?

Rubbish logic.

Demichelis has been awful over here, but was an excellent CB for Argentina.

Veron - awful in England, brilliant everywhere else.

We've conceded 22 goals in 16 games with Mori - we may as well start 1-0 down.

It's not just based on the fact he's a top international though. He's clearly a good player.

What's Blackburn's excuse for being 12th in the championship then, if Duffy would solve OUR defensive problems?

At the very least we need a new defensive coach.

But when he going to start being dominate in the air like we were promised?

I can take the rushed passes and getting caught out of position occasionally, but he was meant to be a ball winner in the air and he looks far from it.

Well, they're all crap in the air to be fair to him

The time argument is the thrust of my defence for Van Dijk, so it would be churlish of me not to extend Funes Mori the same courtesy

He's been here, what, 3 months? If that?

Zippo confidence in the goalie.

Breeds unease. You could have put average/decent defenders in front of Shilton or Schmeical, (probably did in hindsight), and the unit becomes nearly impregnable.

Same, you can put excellent defenders in front of a fading keeper, and that is what we see.

Maybe I'm being too naive or looking at it the wrong way but with a defence like ours, surely we should keep more clean sheets regardless of the keeper.

No. Ropey keeper, on crosses in particular, can destroy a defence unit of Bobby Moore calibre.

I'm all for some Newcastle bashing, but McClaren is as far away from us with a vastly inferior squad as we are from a top 4 place. We are clearly underachieving,
