You haven’t appeared in an Everton shirt since the Cup game (1-1) against West Ham on January 6. What‘s going on?
On February 2, I went to see the manager (Roberto Martinez) about the offer from West Ham, who had offered me a transfer until the end of the season. The next day, during a press conference, he said that he was counting on me and that I would be a part of the team. But since then I haven’t been picked once.
Has he given you an explanation?
No, I haven’t got a clue why. Ask him. We haven’t talked any more since then. There are plenty of things that go down in football and you hope that at least there will be a minimum amount of respect. But anyway, I’ve been playing at a high level for 20 years and I’m enjoying weekends with the family. I’m keeping my spirits up.
Nevertheless, the situation isn’t ideal…
It isn’t enjoyable. If a manager decides that you are not part of the team any more… you have to accept it. What else can you do? Go and knock on his door and start crying, asking „Why“? If he doesn’t feel that he has to explain anything to me after six years at the club, that’s his decision. If I don’t play, it isn’t a probelm. I’m 37 years‘ old. That’s fine, I’ve played my part. I must have about 500 matches in England (Ed. 475 in all competitions). It’s the fact that I am not allowed to compete. That’s the only thing that sticks in my throat a bit. Other than that I don’t have any problem with the club or the players.
What has your daily routine been like since then?
I go training, I do an additional session in the afternoonn as I’ve always done. I go to play with the U21s. They run around like rabbits! That allows me to keep my form. At least when I am allowed to play…
Meaning?
Apparently he (Martinez) wants to see the young ones playing.
The English papers claimed there had been a clash at the beginning of the season.
No. There was no clash.
You were not allowed into the training centre for a week...
I just had a forced period of a week’s rest. But it wasn’t an exclusion.
Are you paying for your age (37 years)? (not sure about this phrase – could be slang?)
I don’t know. I don’t think so. If someone says to me that they would rather prepare for the future, it isn’t a problem. It’s something that is easily understood, if it is explained… But noone has said anything. If, some day, someone says that I am slow then we can put all the central defenders in a line and we can see… There’s nothing to worry about.
You are at the end of your contract. Given these conditions, could you see yourself retiring at the end of the season?
Retiring? Oh no. If you could see the weeks of training that I put myself through to compensate for my lack of competition, you would see that I have no wish to retire! If I can find a club where I feel good. I don’t have any deadline. It’s a shame because I would have loved to finish my career with Everton. But in football you don’t always get what you want.
Glad to see that Martinez can be a snide behind the scenes
Yes, indeed.Glad to see that Martinez can be a snide behind the scenes
Err, my memory isn't as sharp these days........You guys remember the Osman rant of his...
Wonder if that was indication of the tear up
Been a good player for the vast majority of his time as a Blue, everyone makes the odd mistake.
Would have thought the least he deserved was an explanation from the manager that he no longer figured in the first team picture.
Good Luck Sylvain wherever footie takes you next.
Yes, indeed.
But perhaps Distin, being as good as he has for us, may not have been the player (or rather person) to give the cold shoulder to. It's time for Distin to 'not play anymore' though.
Having said that, no player should be immune to criticism.
Glad to see that Martinez can be a snide behind the scenes
Err, my memory isn't as sharp these days........
Remind me
He has been excellent, apart from an abhorration against you-know-who at Wembley of all places. Admitted his error immediately though, so fair play.Im interested to hear the full story that will inevitably come out, more in regard to Martinez then actual events. Distin could well have been the sacrifical lamb of the Moyes old crowd used to bring a fractious dressing room to order and focus - certainly he was the obvious choice to make a point with given his age, lack of longevity and contract situation.
Interesting though Distin has played more PL games for Everton then Duncan Ferguson, Mikel Arteta and Kevin Campbell. So hes been a great servant.
