What was the point of getting Castillo?

Being a defensive mid in the Premiership requires the same attributes as anywhere else, although the Premiership has a higher quantity of exceptional players than other leagues. That said, as mentioned Castillo is an international player, he's not a new kid on the block.

A key part of positioning is getting used to one's defensive teammates. Castillo did not have a pre-season or friendly matches, he was thrown into the fire pretty much right away. If you were to say, his technical skills are not adequate, or he was slow and out of shape, I would be concerned that these are insurmountable obstacles. Positioning is all about knowing your teammates, which, in fairness, requires at least a few matches.

I quite agree. All of which suggests there may have been something going on behind the scenes. We sure need him in that holding role though. If you remember back to those early games we actually kept the ball well, but our defence was shaky due to individual mistakes.

It's not as simple as you think.

In the Premiership, a defensive misfielder needs to be disciplined and knows how to position himself well.

Castillo couldn't do it, although he looked a solid player techincally, he let go of his runners and didn't give his back 4 enough protection.

Unless he has drastically taken steps to improve this, then he'll be nowhere near the team.

Thats a lot of judgement for 2 games.

We haven't seen enough of Castillo to say that he's been "lost" on the pitch.

The fact is that he IS good enough to play for us and Moyes hasn't given him a run in the first team when it's obvious we need someone in front of the back four.

Great post Manolo.

It's not like this is Castillo's first rodeo when it comes to top flight football.

I say put him in NOW !!!

Thinking back, a lot of people were quite impressed by him. But then he was injured, which held his progress back. But now he's fine but still not getting playing time. I'm perplexed and unless he's suddenly turned rubbish overnight, I fail to see how he can be kept out from what amounts to an under-performing midfield. But then I'm not privy to everything Moyes is. But it is a puzzler.

Castillo's last game was the Carling Cup game against Blackburn that consisted of a midfield with Fellaini and Rodwell next to him. Since then...............aint had a sniff.

I;ve been banging on about Castillo to play since he was dropped after the carling cup match. And like Manolo has said, the feller is an international Defensive Midfielder and has been for years.

But we all know Moyes will play Rodwell instead of him.

We're asking the same questions. It's baffling that he's out of the team.

I was thinking this on Monday when watching the game, and the only thing I could come up with is after his wonder strike he probably came over all Bertie Big Potatoes at training and Moyes has put him out of the team till his attitude improves a bit?

Im not sure on Castillo, obviously Moyes knows hes a player but arguably he hasnt adjusted well to English football, dont get me wrong what he did well he did very well, but what he did babdly he did very badly.

Pompey at home, Blackburn away, i have been keeping an eye out for him in the reserves and he hasnt been amazing or anything.

Im going to trust Moyes on this one, although id like to someone come into his position as we badly need it, i can changes on Sat he might be one.

I think he needs the time to adapt.

I just don't think Moyes wants to play two players next to each other in the centre of the park who have only joined the club this season.

He likes experience, especially when things get tough. And the fact the two central players can communicate with not just one another but the rest of the team.

This seems to have led to Castillo paying the price over Fellaini - probably largely because of his height advantage giving us another dimension, partly because of his price tag, partly because he's notched a couple of goals.

So Neiler sats he will trust Moyes on this one. Okay what about Kroldrup, VDM, Valente, Baines, Fernandes to name a few.

I think it comes down perhaps to a bit of telling Moyes he sucks, remember Blomquist!

Bit harsh mate, well hes earned a bit of trust, ok the football this year is dross, there are gaping holes in the team true we all know the reasons for this, which are unlikely to change. The man i beleive regardless of what people feel on Monday, has done a tremendous job for us you cant argue with someone who has been here for almost six years whom has qualified for Europe in three of those seasons considering we were flirting with away trips to Burnley before he took over, for me he hasnt just built a team but a club, lets face it he has brought in quality on a shoe stirng, he has developed systems and structures within the club that have proved successfull and we have a youth team bristleing with potential and talent. Hes doen a good job.

The question remains has he taken Everton as far as he can as a manager, possibly! But is that the clubs fault or the mangers ability?

For me its the clubs!

Secondly without question AVDM and Kroldrup were diasters, but your extreamly harsh on Nuno, Fernandes and Baines all have made a contribution to our recent success in seasons. I laugh when people talk of Baines, we spend all summer maoning about needing squad depth and when we acheive it certain positions we maon about people not getting a game!

Oh and Smith signed Blomquivst, i think!

Neil, I don't think anyone can argue that Moyes hasn't done a good job, at least in regards to results. But since the summer he has been hopeless as manager. Clearly he can turn it around which is why he should remain as manager. But don't forget he's now one of the highest paid bosses in the league (after and before tax). So for that we can expect decent football and the belief that we'll finish the season somewhere near to the top 6 teams. That's not much, and it is not expecting more than we're entitled to expect.

I'd trust him if it was actually working and we had balance in midfield. Sadly we don't so I am going to question why he's leaving our only disiplined defensive midfielder out.

Are we entitled though mate, ok hes paid a lot but has earned a lot too. I personally feel hes earned the money, i know we are all pissed of and the football this season has been dire, but perspective is needed also would you have taken 4 points of Arsenal, 5 of Villa in the top four after the first three games of the season.

Im not defending his decisons at all costs because i think in a lot of games hes made a pigs ear of the game in terms of decisons or lack of them. But he makes more good ones then bad as our position shows, we accept the good ones as granted but we linger on the bad ones and rub his nose in it. Yes he is culpable and rightly so, but it is important to look at the bigger picture i.e. past seasons, money available, potential in the squad, managers track record, other teams inconsistencey. So for me all in all our expectations have been built on his success wheather they are realistic or not is debatable, in terms of pound for pound we've been punching above our weight for many seasons now, the question to reflect upon is why, the answer i find to this question fuels my loayaly to Moyes, like i say im not blind i see the poor decisons, i see the impact, but on the weight of everything in terms of my decison making i have more trust and faith then doubht. Its easy to be an Evertonian when things are going well, but harder when things are not, i have noticed and seen a dicotomy in football vocabularly in the last few years from the term "supporter" to "fan" i very much see myself as a supporter, rather then say everything about my team or club is [Poor language removed] every second breath. Luckily my skills are honed well after the majority of my life time being marked by hoplessness by Everton, which i feel we are no where near to replicating in the long term, as i beleive Moyes is the man.

Ok we dont look like having the form to push on, but the ability is there in terms of the team and the manager, every season is uniuqe and it has to be said no one bar the top four and Villa have shown any great level of consistencey even arsenal are as wobbly as an Arry Rednkapp Jowel. Yes we are lucky to be 7th on current form but its better then another 13 in the leauge.

We could strike a formula all of a sudden and it could be lift of, who knows, its why we will all be watching on Sun. The potential in team was evident in the second half against Utd and if we can get close to that again im not worried.

Over to you Mr Moyes, you have one fan at least!

True. So where did it go? How can a team dominate the champions of europe in one game yet get outplayed by Fulham, Middlesborough and Wigan in others?

We all know we have players to play not only good football but good succesfull football.

But very rarely does that happen these days. And ultimatly the blame lies at Moyes feet.

If we can play well as the man u game proved why dont we?
