It isnt, at all. In fact fundamentalist Islam and the related terror threat is probably the least threatening major threat to face the UK of the past hundred years.

It's certainly not the least in any shape or form. As a country yes Britain has faced clear immediate threats from Napoleon's France to communist Russia with a few German nutjobs thrown in for good measure - but British society? No not in my opinion

I hope it's not something related to Muslims or the racists will run riot

the racists don't need an excuse. they may as you say, 'run riot' ( full definition of 'run riot' not supplied ).

but if other purported none racists ...' run riot ' ( full def. etc )

does that mean every one who 'runs riot ' ( full def. etc ) is a racist or just appalled and peed off at the whole terrorist thing.

Then we get to the supposed cure... more restrictions on our freedom to protect our freedom.

* gets can opener for new can of worms

Any cure for all this may be worse than the illness, which stops Govnmt doing anything effective about it.

* trying as I write to swerve out of the path of the political banhammer, but deep down mods...Everything is political

Say no more.

But that's where it's more dangerous.

You're point about the IRA is different as their was a clear black and white (no racist connotations there).

Where it is religious based, the perception is nothing to do with race, background, part of world you come from... It's one belief.

And as we are in a democratic society where "freedom" is a part of it, a culture bound by a strict religion ends up being looked at strangely by the average Joe. That person doesn't hold any strong religious beliefs, can't get his head around it, doesn't understand it. Feels oppressed by it. Add to hundreds of other things that irritates him.. Taxes, immigrants, job's, etc this makes him angry.

Then all of a sudden this happens. Fuels the fear and anger. Then times that countrywide. The perception then becomes dangerous.

The objectives of militant Islam have a global reach.

Maybe in their wildest, late night dreams. The fact is though that the majority of terror attacks and activity carried out by militant Islamists, especially groups who claim to be al-Qaeda affiliated, is directed against other non-Sunni and secular muslims, usually in muslim countries.

Why? Few people convert to this form of Islam, far more muslims become secular as the result of living in the UK. The number of (for instance) communist and fascist sympathisers was far higher, they had far more influence, and they caused far more damage than fundamentalist muslims have.

throw rocks at police, generally cause a nuisance at exactly the wrong time

They see it as the right time though. You've just given them the ego boost they need.

The threat is never going to be outside, it's going to communities ripping themselves a part. That's the danger.
