Retiring Numbers

Retiring shirt numbers is a silly idea, next thing you know they'll be reserving the number 12 shirt for the fans, which is even more silly. Didn't some team try that once?

Yeah, the fans were the "12th man". It was someone [Poor language removed], maybe Derby, I'm sure it was printed in their programme

you never know when the next 'rooney' will come along. keep your options open.

hmmm. rooney. he would have been a half decent number nine for us.

I thibk that if a club is too retire a number in a player's honour then it should be stright after they've retired (e.g. Maldini)
If Everton had retired the number in honour of Dixie after he left, then it would have meant other great Evertonians would have not had the shirt.
I think that Ferguson and Sharp would not have worn it, So the shirt would not be as special as it is.

I'm not sure but didn't we do that once with the #40 shirt????

I'm really not sure though, b ut i think it was in a match day programe about 5 years ago????

Stupid idea imo, thankfully we've never done it and I can't see us doing it. To retire a number for a player they've got to be a pretty special player and they don't come more special than Dixie. We didn't do it for his number.

In American sports (aside from handegg, although they still do it) specific numbers don't have anything to do with a position, therefore retiring a number doesn't really affect anything. For example #42 is retired for all of Major League Baseball for Jackie Robinson, but it doesn't at all affect players numbers.

Imagine getting a proper 9 once and for all and not being able to let him wear 9.

In summation, I'd be fine with retiring a number like 23 if it was warranted (meaning it was the number of a generational talent on par with di stefano or cruyff or zidane) but anything 1-11 should be untouchable imo.

we should only reserve our number 9 for that special evertonian striker, but never retire it - that's a stupid idea

Agree with that.

It is kind of similar to what has happened at Motherwell. After Phil O'Donnell died, the number ten was never officially retired and it was given to his nephew, David Clarkson, the following season.

We've not had a number ten since Clarky left, I'd imagine it'll be a while before we do, and it'll be for someone deserving who receives it.

Just throwing this out there..

Why dont we do it..
Just once..

We all sing about our history..

No-one is in the number 9 right now..

New shirt coming out soon.. why not, for once actually mention our history and say " Everton wont be using the number 9 anymore as its Dixies Number ! "

Then release a limited number of shirts with ' Dean / Dixie 9 ' on them ?

Founder members of the Football league.. some two bob outfits with money around now.. I say we look into it.
