How much would it take to be serious title contenders?

How many of our current squad would you want to retain - and how many players are we short of being truly top 2 material?

IMO the team is decent (nay even very good) and managed by a good coaching team we are roughly where we want to be/expect to be - perhaps a couple of places higher than some critics believe us to be worthy of but assuming you could wave a magic wand and buy a Man U level of quality team (forget Chavski for the time being - that's silly money) - so the question stands - how many of the current squad are part of this mythical Everton side and how many have to move on?

For my money - Lescott, Arteta, Yobo, Cahill, Yakubu (in the right mood of course) look sure starters. Baines, Pienaar and Fernandes (if with us!) have potential and Howard is capable. Vaughan has great potential, if fit - perhaps Victor even. Others such as Leon Osman and Jags would probably be subs. But, whilst not particularly keen to see the remainder move on, it has been, and is likely to remain, a gradual growth process. Do you, age of these players permitting (Cahill may be out of the question in say 3 years time), agree with me? Have we got "half a really good side" or not?

Yes

We would compete if we funded Arshavin, Diarra, Joaquin, Lucho Gonzalez and a world class striker

:D

Bring Mourinho. In 2/3 years we'll be challenging for top honours.

BTW have you read what he thinks of Arshavin?

Mourinho isn't a better manager than Moyes, he had limitless funds at Chelski and still couldn't get anywhere near the CL. Moyes ain't perfect but he is the best manager we've had for years. I can't understand people still want a new manager, look at Bolton since Allardyce left, the grass isn't always greener

I dont think you are that far off Mate. As a United fan I have seen you grow from strength to strength under Moyes I rate the games against Everton amongst the toughest. You played really well at old trafford last season and were worth at least a point ( Much better than your lovely neighbours who we could have put 8 past)

I think we're a long way off the title unfortunately. We've had the best squad since I've supported the club, but we don't have anyone that would get near a world XI, and you need that kind of quality throughout the team to challenge for the title. You only have to look at the gulf between Liverpool and the top to see how far we are away.

We need to compete regularly in the CL before we can start thinking about the title.

We need 100 million every summer and we wont get this as KENWRONG (out) is holding us back so he can flog us to Tesco and make a mint and buy a yacht and die his hair with dead expensive stuff.

I've also heard we're skint this year and Arteta is leaving. To the [Poor language removed].

No, who told you that chico, not Arteta doing a Barmby, that would be sick. I thought he would only go back to Spain but i suppose with all the spaniards Analfield is as close as you get without actually going there

For me instant starters should be:

Howard - Best keeper at Everton - ever, well maybe just beneath southall.

Jagielka, Lescott - Both great defenders, solid in the defence.

Arteta, Cahill - Both great attackers.

Yakubu - Great when hes feeling up to it.

Bench players: Osman, vaughan (pot.), Ruddy...(rest of squad etc...)

Im tempted to add Neville in their too, because he is a fantastic captain and a good right back. Positions we need to improve on are the usual, defensive mid, left wing, and striker.

Whatever it is we need, and opinions vary, we aren't far from competing.

I honestly believe that (and that's without my standard issue, GOT Blue Tinted Glasses.)

I think last season was a big one for our squad mentally the Cup Run, and the Uefa Cup run and finiishing fifth is great expierence and confidence for the starting 11 another step in devepelopment. To consistently perform on so many fronts was a great acheivement.

The stature of our club has changed in contempory football, but i would argue the next step is CL football. We need three players of Lescott, Yak, Arteta quality to be added through the transfer window, and suplimented, by the youth coming through, Rodwell Gosling etc. I am really excited about Vaghan approaching full fitness hes as good as other young player i have seen in the country or abroad and if he was not here i would be banging on about signing him. If the above falls into place i think we have a good shout for CL football.

If we can acheive CL football over a couple of seasons this would give us the launch pad to challenge for the cups, and the Leauge. All going well i would hope we would at least be contenders by the end of the next five year plan, hopefully con vincing Moyes to sign another contract. If we dont acheive at least CL football by the end of his next deal i think he would seriousl consider going.

Have to say this is the least worried ive been in any transfer window in years.
