2025/26 David Moyes

leeds/Farke called his bluff. 3 at the back with two wing backs made space difficult to find. When they were in possession a CB would step up from defence into midfield and the wingback (bogle) would be on the move. We couldn't cope with this as their pattern of play was to overlap vs Myko. How was this calling Moyes bluff? We couldn't get the ball through to Barry often enough to isolate vs 1 CB, he got a couple of half chances but we couldn't do regular enough. They defended from the front, and looked to press as quick as they could, it meant the defender stepping out of defence releasing bogle just slotted back into shape when we had possession. We don't have enough guile to break a side sitting deep with a layer of protection in midfield, down. The space leeds left behind the wingbacks needed attacking and dragging a CB across to cover - meaning space in the box for a cross to be aimed at one of ours. We didn't get hold of that idea till late, and we don't have anything at LB or RB to support a winger looking for that play. Also McNeil isn't quick enough to expose a wingback or a covering CB.
Moyes set up to impose our game on them, that didn't work, they were sharper and hungrier and got on the front foot.
So he matched them up at HT and we got back into the game from there, but were fighting uphill because we were already a goal down.

(I called the changing a winning side shout in the match thread btw)

We got D-Hall back and Branthwaite. Gana and Illy back to. Shame Grealish is out. We got a lesson last night out of Cal-Lewin about the lone striker and working his socks off. Granted he should have scored, but we know all about that.

We should be this, that and the other, should be beating these, those and them. etc. Our quality is wafer thin, and we're closer to an average side than we are to a quality one. We still have the remnants of benitez signings in the starting eleven. It's no coincidence the better Moyes sides with us were built on Coleman and Baines in the fullback slots. Until we have a fully functioning starting eleven all fit we can all gnash our teeth and demand sackings and complain about poor games. What next, another survival expert to keep us just about alive in the PL?

First half was bad last night, it got changed and we were better and earned a point. It aint perfect but I'm glad it wasn't a loss. DCL scores and we were finished yesterday, no doubt!
He didn’t have Coleman and Baines, which gets mentioned quite a lot bizarrely. All through his last tenure, he had Hibbert as right back for about 9yrs and while he’s better than Myko he wasn’t the greatest attacking full back, just a very good defender.

A braver manager or maybe a more tactically aware manager,
Would have gone with our full backs against theirs and still had 2 centre backs v DCL and then
Dropped Armstrong back so we had a midfield 3. Then play Ndiaye and maybe Dibling as inside forward off Barry. This would have caused them a big problem with either the CB coming out to
Ndiaye and Dibling or midfielders dropping back and giving us more space in midfield. But Moyes more concerned with the opposition as per usual did a bit of a hallway house. Getting McNeil and Ndiaye at times to track their wing backs,
Leaving 4 defenders marking 1
Striker and 2 midfielders up against Leeds 3 and sometimes 4 when Arronson dropped back and leaving Armstrong and Barry isolated.

Leeds had played this system for the last month or so and it seemed our manager was the only person who didn’t realise and maybe Irvine( what does he offer?) looks like an 80yr old man who the club have said can sit on the bench.

I think it comes from a bit of fear of the unknown,

another abomination. some nerve to come wheedling out of the woodwork looking for a bonus.

You see, the support, the fan base, the people put through this misery are punch drunk, gun shy, not keen on any more torture. It's not unknown, it's footballing terrorism. A little bit of peace and stability will allow some recovery. Can't keep going back to draw ever deeper from the well, eventually it dries up.

It's January, and we're clear of the relegation swamp. Isn't it nice. For a change. Next step going further upwards.

It was an arm wrestle, which side imposes their way first and gets on the front foot. We weren't even third place in a two horse race. He left it, we conceded, the side didn't wake up, so he changed it. Then we got back into it more. leeds were reeling last 10 minutes or so and we couldn't kill them off. We cannot afford to give an entire half of front foot football away to our opposition, whoever they are. Yesterday was the same shock and awe stuff that buried us vs newcastle and spurs. If leeds were better they'd have been out of sight. fortunately for us they're not that efficient.

No idea what the Irvine stuff is about.

I think with Lampard he recognised we can't dominate a game and he tried to change it too quickly, to try and achieve this. Even Carlo knew we couldn't do this and he had us defend the 18 yard box all game. I remember listening to Steve Bruce when he was maybe at newcastle and he was saying to switch from a team who compete, to a team who dominate, is one of the most difficult transitions in football. Lampard may have been out of his depth but I just wonder if he'd taken the transition more slowly if it could have worked out.

OMG, he said in his press conference he couldn't put his finger on why we were so bad in the first half. We could all see it. We were getting overrun in midfield. It's as simple as that. What's he getting paid for. I'm shocked. He should have stuck to a flat 3 in midfield with the same guys we had at villa.
I'm so happy he's getting paid millions for this ExPeRiEnCeD ApPRoAcH.

Wasn't just midfield, the way they set up gave them space and overloads all over the place - our players felt they needed to press and whenever we did it gave Leeds pockets to play into and they ran rings around us

First half was as bad as I've seen for a while and we were lucky it was only 1-0

Watched a rerun of the match and towards the end of the first half Moyes and Baines were deep in conversation with Baines explaining something and gesticulating with his hands while Moyes listened intently. Maybe most of the credit for last night's second half turnaround actually belongs to Baines and not Moyes.
I'm not surprised he's turning to Baines when the alterantive is his fellow two scotch divvies Irvine and McKinlay.
