Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Morning all. Yesterday was an interesting one. On Monday the fridge in our built in fridge freezer started freezing everything, which was likely the thermostat, so I ordered a new one which came yesterday morning. I asked George , a Ukrainian, to fit it as he has a great local reputation. But it turns out it wasn’t the thermostat but could be the circuit board or the sensor. Any way George is coming back this afternoon to have another go at fixing it and we have a fridge freezer out of its housing, doors off etc. George is from Mariupol, a lovely guy , and he was showing us photos of the devastation there before they eventually fled the City. It does certainly bring home the horrors of Putin’s war.

Morning all, clear blue skies here but decidedly chilly. Walk to the shops has been postponed until the light dusting of snow and ice on the pavement has melted as I don’t want to risk a broken hip, something that, previously, would never crossed my mind. Another indicator of my advancing years came yesterday when I received an email from Posh offering tickets at half price for the next two games. Once I would have snapped their hands off but the late kick off times of 8.00 pm on a Thursday and Tuesday coupled with the cold mean I’d rather stay at home. I’m getting soft in my old age.😂.
Have a good day, all💙

@Val P I see the 1878s will have their Bramley Moore debut at the Arsenal game. What a special night that will be right before Christmas.

Will you be involved in the display yourself?
It will be amazing won’t it but no we won’t be involved unless there is a flag on our seat then lots of waving will be done - looking forward to seeing it.

Morning all, I’m catching up in clumps at the moment- baby minding days are full on and then I’m snoozing in the chair by 8. Another busy day today - just about to go into a teams meeting online then off to Preston this afternoon for a face to face hearing. I have no idea how I ever held down a demanding full time job 😂.
Have a great Friday everyone and catch up later 💙

Hi everyone. Obviously I haven’t posted for a while but I’ve had a lot on my plate regarding looking after Kay and my own health. I’d gotten a very small rash on one leg (near the ankle) and my foot began to swell a bit to the extent that I could only wear one pair of shoes. I mentioned it to the Doctor and she had me do a variety of blood tests, urine etc before telling me she didn’t have a clue. Next it was chest X-rays , then a colonoscopy, then ultrasound, still not a clue. She obviously thought about cancer, but I was totally clear. This of course was taking up a tremendous amount of time going to hospitals etc. The doctors latest view (guess) is that it may be liver related and so I gave up any alcohol (I never used to drink a lot anyway) while the God’s debate what, if any, liver tests I should undertake. I certainly can’t fault the thoroughness. Meanwhile I’d had all my tablets changed and put on a course of antibiotics which while ridding me of a terrible cough had other side effects leaving me with a bit of dizziness but that could be related to a new problem with my hearing. I still try to get to my pub but less frequently and the staff immediately make me a mug of tea. I’ve got another appointment on Monday but have noticed that my foot swelling has gone down, so we shall see.

My kids have been terribly worried about me and breathed a sigh of relief when I wrote to EFC and relinquished my season ticket due to this dizziness.

Anyway, that’s what has been happening, sorry for the moan…..

Hi Pete, firstly it’s great to hear from you again. I’m sorry to read about your recent and ongoing health issues, hopefully the swelling aspect continues to go down . When you’re in the midst of such things there is so much going on that GOT becomes very much secondary but I’m glad you are posting again . It’s a shame about your season ticket , but it sounds like a sensible decision all be it one that was likely hard to make. Take care.

Good to hear from you Pete, albeit disappointing to read about your troubles. Hopefully you get positive news from the medics soon and you can put it all behind you.

In other news, I have been following this story, and fallout, all week. Would love to hear your view on it as a publican:

I share your views about 8 o’clock kickoffs, there was a Buckie match for me to attend this Wednesday which was called off because of the weather but in my mind I’d decided not to go any way. Despite multi layers, hat, gloves, scarf I’m always cold during the winter matches , and although I’m back home about 10:10 pm I need an hour or so and a whisky to thaw out and can’t go to bed before then. I would recommend the whisky aspect though Gwladys , even if you don’t go to the match!

Hi AT, I’m not too familiar with what happens in NI. All I can say is that it feels like the hospitality industry, like in the rest of the U.K., is being beaten with a very heavy stick. As the article says, the costs of everything have gone up together with associated VAT, NIC, Minimum wage etc etc. I don’t know how many are going to survive and again because of staff cost increases, restaurants etc have had to reduce staff which invariably takes away first time jobs for youngsters. It’s a shambles and nothing is being done by government to help. We are a wet led pub and don’t make a profit, but we can live with that with keeping the pub open and our local staff employed. But if it gets much worse and lose too much money, the pub and its outside area will be turned into a housing development. It’s good to see someone trying to do something to help but our stupid government haven’t got a clue. I’m not sure I’ve answered your question but any assistance in any form would help….sorry for the rant……

Wonderful to hear from you Pete but as bl and AT have both said saddened to hear of your health problems.
Very best wishes for a full and complete recovery asap.

In NI you cannot open a bar, or an off licence, unless someone surrenders their liquor licence. As you would expect, these licences are worth six figure sums due to their scarcity. Think of them as pension plans for landlords.

A recent study recommended that this system be replaced by one whereby licences are granted according to local population need. This was rejected outright by the Minister to much acclaim from the hospitality industry. It is a cartel in all but name.

I agree re hospitality in general taking a hammering and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. It’s a perpetuating problem sadly as your potential new younger drinkers can’t afford to go out early and stay out. Drinks in the house before a night out is the common practice now.

I might have to try the whiskey suggestion. My issue after an 8pm game on TV is that I can’t settle my head for sleep until ages after.
