Priorities - the league or a tilt at silverware?

What should Everton focus on this season?

I've no idea, I just know that some had a fleeting moment of glory and it cost them their future.

Maybe I'm just old school like that. I like being a supporter of the club that's been the longest in the top league, because I know it'd be fanfare and festivals if it was someone else. The more pain Everton do to the cabal and their ghouls in the media pushing their brand for kick backs the better.
None of them did. It didn't cost them their future, there are multiple reasons why those teams got relegated in the seasons after they won a trophy. Swansea for example were punching well above their weight to even get into the Premier League, never mind winning a cup. We are not giving the cabal any pain by staying in the league. If you want to get back at them then the only way is to start winning trophies. If you're content with just staying in the league that's up to you but don't expect others to feel the same way.

But that assumes that the cup win and both their relegation and poor later form are related and causal.

What is the evidence it was down to the cup win - either all or in part?
the moving of the final, the getting turned inside out to chelsea 5-0 and the GD getting moved.

When you put all your eggs in one basket...

Wasn’t their defeat vs Chelsea more down to a first half red card and Chelsea being the best side in the league that year? Did they rest players for the Chelsea game so they play could them in the cup?

Even if you believe it played a part in their relegation, why do you think it impacted their long term future? Plenty of teams have gone down and bounced back up the next year.

wigan didn't.
That is true. But wasn’t that more down to off pitch management issues than the fact they won a cup?

And if you assign that demise, in part or all, to a cup win what position would Everton have to be in for you to be comfortable with us challenging or even winning a cup without fearing replicating Wigan?

Do you feel for example we need to be comfortably in the top 4 places for 3 years to risk an FA cup campaign? What are your parameters for when it is safe?

Fwiw I feel we could have risked a league cup run this year without emulating Wigan’s fate. Under Moshiri….possibly not!

Try me that again please...
Didn’t they have a bit of a weird owner that then handed it over to a relative ? I could well be remembering that wrong but I my recollection was he was bit Kenwright-ish.

Edit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wigan_Athletic_F.C.
On 9 March 2014 Wigan beat Manchester City to reach the semi-final of the FA Cup at Wembley for the second successive year, where they played Arsenal, and lost 4–2 on penalties after normal time and extra time resulted in a 1–1 draw. After finishing 5th in the Championship, Wigan lost their play-off semi-final to Queens Park Rangers.[24]

Rösler was sacked in November 2014 with the club in the relegation places,[25] and was replaced by Malky Mackay. Whelan resigned as chairman on 3 March 2015, remaining as owner but handing over the chairmanship to his grandson David Sharpe.[26] The following month, with Wigan in danger of relegation to League One, Mackay was sacked and replaced by former Wigan captain Gary Caldwell,[27] yet the team ended the season with relegation.[28] The squad changed drastically, including the signings of Will Grigg from Brentford and Reece James from Manchester United.[29][30] The side lost only once in 23 matches in the second half of the season[31] and won the division, with Grigg the league's top scorer with 25 goals.[32]

Second chance...
Give a gal a minute to look stuff up Rita, “Wigan Athletic management issues in 2015” would not be my specialist subject of choice!

But since I’ve answered why I think their long term issues were more about the management, care to explain why you think it about their cup win?

Or alternatively when you would think it safe for Everton to have a cup win without following them down the leagues?

We are a team that has been involved with the relegation zone more than we would like to admit over the last few years. David Moyes was brought in to ensure we didn’t go down. He has moved the argument forward to the point where we are now talking about how far up the league we can go. We have lurched from basket case managers to basket case managers for a while now, then we get in a very safe pair of hands and we complain that he is a safe pair of hands. I am as disappointed as anyone that we didn’t put out a team capable of beating Wolves but, hand on heart, did anyone think that this Everton team was going to win a trophy. We were relegation fodder before Moyes was appointed, now we are not. Are we a trophy winning club, no we are not. Will we be a trophy winning side in the future I say yes

wigan didn't.

Don't know if you are playing Devil's advocate or not, last time I looked we are not Wigan.. Our wage bill is nearly double the bottom teams in the league, our matchday and commercial income will be multiple times larger this season. If we operate in a half decent manner we shouldn't be looking over our shoulder.

Nearly half the league has the distraction of European football to worry about and we had nearly a week until our next PL game anyhow. All we had to do is play our strongest 11 and we could do well in both competitions.
