Priorities - the league or a tilt at silverware?

What should Everton focus on this season?

Honestly? Priority is 1st get into europe. Then a cup run. The big issue we found recruiting this past window was the quality players didnt want to come here because of a lack of europe. We cant realistically make any cup run, or compete higher up the table, without those better players. We cant get those better players without europe. In my opinion, 8th place is the gateway to winning a cup or having long term success in the league. It doesnt make that happen, but its almost impossible to achieve that without it. Palace aside, it is an unsurprisingly low number of 9-20th place team who have won cups in the past 30 years.
Yes and Palace did it as they have a manager who can improve players on the training ground and set the team up in an attacking manner and is not scared of the bigger teams.

We aren't winning the league.

Even if we get in Europe/another cup competition - we continue to prioritise the league over it then?

So we end up just existing just to what?

Every season, a club that hasn't won a bean for 30 years should be prioritising cups.

The thing is it's not even about prioritising anything. Just don't surrender any cup competition.

Klopp/Guardiola whining on about too many games has made people think rotation is essential. It certainly isn't for a team like Everton with no Europe.
This post sums the whole thing up perfectly. Close the thread.

Personally think improving league placing and building is really important. Start getting into Europe and bolstering the squad. If a cup run is on the cards I wouldn't say no.

Winning a cup is hard mind. Four times in 25 years has the FA Cup been won by a team outside the Sky darlings. 5 times for the league cup by my reckoning.

You can't write things off and you only get the chance to win by competing all the way through. But it's not given at all.
This

Essentially as we improve our league position and strengthen our squad, then Cup runs will naturally follow. Sure you can have the one off dopamine hit of a good run here and there, but for cup runs, plural, to be a sustainable thing to expect, we have to get a better squad, more confidence, etc, in general.

Process is everything

Yeah I didn't really mind the squad that was put out the other night, I was more surprised at how poorly they performed. This team is fresh off years of relegation battles, I could honestly give less a damn about some league cup at the moment. I love watching cup games too, but the importance just isn't there, we need to be consistent in the league and hopefully fight for euro spots in the coming years. I completely understand frustration over our current predicament but this takes time. Right now I just want to finish higher in the league than we did last year. Cup runs would be a bonus but nothing more IMO.
WOW - A lot of supporters revealing their true selves in this post. Just a reminder 'Nil Satis Nisi Optimum" means we do give a damn about every competition we enter.

I really don't understand the logic behind thinking you can prioritise one competition over another. You plan your resources around going out and trying to win every game.

The priority should be to improve the competitiveness of the side. If they keep winning more games, the chances of beating enough teams to win a cup increases. The league position will also improve, perhaps dramatically so.

Until such time as the team are consistently good enough, nothing changes for the better ...

My "true self" is not based around a football opinion. Good lord.

I watched the game, I was disappointed with the result. I love cup games overall and I would really have liked to see us advance, but oh well. I'm just not going to get that upset over a game I don't hold as much importance to as compared to the league. If we finish higher than last year and have no relegation fears at any point in the season then I'm happy.

Easily pleased.

I'm not talking about you as a person, you may be a lovely human being, you most probably are. I'm talking about people views about what's important to them as a supporter of Everton football club. In that context your statement is revealing as is your reply. I find it amazing that after not winning a trophy for 30 years all it takes to make you happy is finishing higher than last season. Of course nothing is guaranteed but I do know you aren't going to get success unless our actual aim is to win trophies.

It all depends.

If we were in the running to win the league or even finish in a CL place then obviously league is priority.

Ditto if we were involved in a relegation battle then cups are of little import.

Personally I don’t think there is a snowball’s chance of the former and I don’t believe we will be involved in the latter.

So if it comes down to prioritising a mid table finish over a good cup run and possible success in one then I am all over prioritising the cups.

Think those words have probably plagued the minds of every fan at some point, and not just at our club..

6 rounds to win the League cup..that's just 6 extra games in 7 months , 6 games where you can use 5 subs if god forbid someone's knackered , which is almost half the team !

We had no Europe games to worry about like many other teams do ,It's early in the season ,we're in a decent position in the league and yet he makes 7 changes ( when asked why he said " no reason")just to try and make himself look clever , what a kn.b !

Rant over ,still fuming
