Priorities - the league or a tilt at silverware?

What should Everton focus on this season?

It may not be enough to silence them but it would at least give us a starting point to develop into a more competitive side. We have a terribly long trophy drought which will only be extended unless we treat all cup competitions with the seriousness they deserve. Chasing after cup triumphs does not necessarily mean that we have to make sacrifices when it comes to our league form.

Which is why I prefer us to keep progressing heavily in the league.

@summerisle a decent bet too!

Ideally we need both progress in the league and success in the cup competitions, but most of their taunts allude to our trophy drought. Putting an end to that drought would be the single best thing we could do to put an end to their taunts. I think that any silverware from winning a major competition (for me that includes the League Cup) would bring far more joy to our fanbase than their fans get out of taunting us.

Personally just white noise to me whenever RS people try taunt me but worse for you guys in the city I imagine. Still, crap we went out but let’s try finish top 8.

We aren't winning the league.

Even if we get in Europe/another cup competition - we continue to prioritise the league over it then?

So we end up just existing just to what?

Every season, a club that hasn't won a bean for 30 years should be prioritising cups.

The thing is it's not even about prioritising anything. Just don't surrender any cup competition.

Klopp/Guardiola whining on about too many games has made people think rotation is essential. It certainly isn't for a team like Everton with no Europe.

So you think the cup win contributed to both their relegation and the poor long term health of that club? Not sure I agree, think there were wider off field factors about the club ownership.

But assuming you are correct do you expect the same for Palace and Newcastle? And if not, why? Do you think West Ham are struggling now because of their Europa win or is it more to do with off pitch issues?

What level would Everton need to be at for you to be comfortable with a cup run? Not meaning to have a go, just genuinely curious on the logic.
He very much thinks correlation equals causation.

Each cup competition, if you get to the finals, will add 5-6 matches without FA cup replays factored in.

Making wholesale changes to the lineup in September, and then undoing them anyway after the first half, serves no purpose.

Also, not progressing in the cup offers less opportunities for the fringe players you're trying to get minutes for.

There's no good logic behind it.

I think that’s a fair point that I hadn’t really considered. For those from further afield it’s probably impossible to imagine just how soul destroying it is for local fans dealing with it on a daily basis, and that probably does affect the way we look at it to some extent. Shutting up the constant kopite taunts is a major driver in what I want from Everton.

I think you need a decent squad to win anything these days and there is no way we could build a squad in 5 minutes as the Wolves game proved.
Like it or not I think it will be 2 or 3 seasons before we even get a sniff of silverware so my personal priority would be concentrate on the league and make a few changes for cup games. Build a decent squad.
And as @The binman chronicles suggested, use more subs in league games and it won't matter about changing it up for cup games.
