Priorities - the league or a tilt at silverware?

What should Everton focus on this season?

Wigan won a cup and then basically died. Is that what people would prefer?

I'm more of a long-term stability into consistent cup runs progress kinda man.
We`re dying the slowest of slow deaths waiting to win a trophy. Any kind of silverware just to shut the RS up with their smart arse performances every derby reminding us how long its been, I`d then die happy knowing we shut them up.

Bit late this thread, as we've already bottled our best opportunity. We should always seek silverware, as the chance doesn't come that often. As we're still stuck with a manager who thinks best of the rest will do, we won't be seeing it anytime soon.

The irony. The last time we were challenging for Europa, a lot of our fans didn’t want to qualify in case it derailed the league the next season.

I’d love a good cup run, but how many finals have reached in the last 20 years. I’d much rather go after qualifying in Europe, we’ve a much better record in that 20 years.

You can attract better players if you make European competitors..

So you think the cup win contributed to both their relegation and the poor long term health of that club? Not sure I agree, think there were wider off field factors about the club ownership.

But assuming you are correct do you expect the same for Palace and Newcastle? And if not, why? Do you think West Ham are struggling now because of their Europa win or is it more to do with off pitch issues?

What level would Everton need to be at for you to be comfortable with a cup run? Not meaning to have a go, just genuinely curious on the logic.

No, but prioritising a cup over a league is very common and unless your class is hard to balance. Just look at United and Spurs last year when they realised they might win a cup.

Also not saying we’d get relegated either going for one but there is definitely an enormous lack of walk before you can run in this fanbase.

Its not a binary choice.

There is no way this team should possibly be thinking about relegation.

They SHOULD be thinking about winning a cup.
I was going to make the same point about this choice not being binary. Any club of our stature should be aiming to challenge in the league and win cup competitions. Both the league and cup competitions provide routes into European competition. My view is that the easiest trophy for us to win would be the UEFA Conference League, a competition for which I feel qualification would be more difficult than winning the competition.

Yeh having the retort “we won the EFL Cup!” would really shut Liverpool fans up. C’mon now…

It may not be enough to silence them but it would at least give us a starting point to develop into a more competitive side. We have a terribly long trophy drought which will only be extended unless we treat all cup competitions with the seriousness they deserve. Chasing after cup triumphs does not necessarily mean that we have to make sacrifices when it comes to our league form.
