2024/25 Harrison Armstrong

In the bits I’ve seen of them that was the poorest Derby performance. Nothing special from Armstrong but good enough in the touches he had. It looked like they moved him to a lone centre half at one stage for a few minutes at the end , just him at the back , a bit crazy, then subbed him .

Fun how people see the game differently.

The last 10-15mins before he was subbed he looked to me like the only player who was composed enough to recycle the ball calmly from a deep position.

There was only 3 or 4 mins left when he came off but afterwards, Derby in attacking positions kept losing the ball.

Interesting he's been deep at Derby (deep lying playmaker) while for Everton youth hes been more advanced i think? I remember he netted a bunch in the youth match he dropped down for.

A McKenna or a Lampard ball playing team or a move to a foreign side who could use him in that deep playmaking role could suit his development.

He did have a couple of tackles, one a great one but does seem to be more of a Barry type than a box to box player who would press.

I suppose posters may be right on his defensive positioning, didnt really notice that myself. To be developed into a Carrick / Barry type role could be the way to go.

I very much hope the Rigg rumours are true and we can bring him in.

He and Armstrong look like they could complement one another well. It would be great to see that partnership develop.

As for Armstrong, we'll have to see where he is next season and where he plays. Perhaps it may be a different role to give him more all round experience.

I don’t think Rigg would be starting here either though. Possibly closer to then Harrison is. Worth signing but not for anything in excess of £25m I’d say.

Same here. He was head and shoulders above anyone on that pitch in the second half. I don’t care who we sign, he should be in the squad next season - if he is, he’ll be first choice within months. Some players just have it, don’t they?

Did we watch the same game? Nothing to suggest he'd be anywhere near the first team based on today. He's getting massively over hyped at the moment based on very little evidence.

Anonymous 1st half for obvious reasons.

2nd half was either deep or popping up on the right. Seemed to be the one who was able to recycle the ball and either make a simple pass / touch or thread one forward.

A couple of tackles, one great and i think on this showing he'd definitely be competition for Garner in that right central position.

If we were to use a deep midfielder to keep things ticking over then he's getting that experience now.

Barry, Carrick and Ballack were all champions league level players. I've seen nothing to suggest Armstrong will even be a bog standard premier league player. Let's not get carried away.

Perhaps you could point out where you disagree with me?

I see a player that:

1: Turned 18 3 months ago and is trusted by his manager to start and play 90mins almost every game in the championship.

2: Is trusted by his teammates who constantly use him as an outlet.

3: Doesnt seem to lose the ball and constantly recycles posession.

4: Is adept at both sideways and forward passes.

5: Roams forward, sideways to the right but mostly holds a deep midfield position.

6: Can put in a good tackle.

Not sure what you disagree with of those 6 points?

Thats what I saw. Eustace could have put a prime Pirlo or Busquets in the same role today -- what would you have expected them to do in the same situations?

Perhaps strolled forward and hit a 30 yarder -- but in terms of passing, the level of players hes with there isnt going to be much more I'd expect a deep midfielder to do on the ball -- the pitch was absolutely shocking.

To me, he looked good on the ball. Others questioned his defensive ability though he made one great tackle and one other solid tackle.

I didnt really notice players going past him, perhaps his defensive positioning wasnt very good -- but i didnt notice that.

No one is suggesting he will reach those levels. Were highlighting the 'type' of player he may become. Whether a deep playmaker like at Derby, a box to box or an advanced midfielder.

I have watched him a few times and he is playing as a deep lying almost defensive midfielder and has done a good job in a relegation fight. He has been disciplined in the job he has been asked to do by Eustace who has said as much. We have seen him further up the pitch at Everton and he has done well. In my humble opinion I think he deserves a opportunity in preseason Friendly's I think this lad will get more of a chance with Moyes than Barkley did because he follows the managers directions. Finger crossed he does well1

It's what would be best for him and his development.
Another 30-40 games at championship level will do him no harm whatsoever if he's good enough.
