What does Steigen have to do with managers? He isn't one as far as I know.

Player signings are big strategic decisions as they can affect the club for years. And this is not just one player but several. How long did the 2017 splurge Moshiri paid for affect the club? In a way it still is, maybe and hopefully we finally get over it this summer.

Completely lost on what we're talking about here.

Heitinga as I think I said was good for one year. After that crap. Think you have forgotten the bad and only remember his first season.

Just because forwards walk into our team doesn't make them great signings. I'm sure it's not hard to buy a RW for say 30 million who walks into this team. Still doesn't mean he would be a good signing. Ditto for CF.
I didn't put Fellaini, Mirallas and Yakubu down as misses if you read my message carefully. Just that Moyes paid a lot of money for each of them and considering the budgets back then they weren't special either. I don't think you'd be happy with a 30 million Mirallas.

Yes, Jelavic scored during his first half season. 7 goals in 37 matches for a player who does very little apart from scoring is IMO not much. From mid-December to the end of season he scored exactly ONE goal.

How funny to read that about a 20-year old player. "Once was decent but is now crap". Yeah, because it's absolutely certain that if a 20-year old player has a poor half a season after a long injury, he must just be crap.

OR, a very young player with a very short career behind him may have had a purple patch on the way to becoming a vastly inferior striker than we need.

Whether injury affected or not, there’s been a massive drop-off in form after what could hardly be described as a sustained period of looking good. Which is the fluke? Is he more Harry Kane or Michael Ricketts? I’m not against a transfer gamble but this one is too rich for my blood.

So why did you bring up Steigen then?

Let's take an example. Say there's a company with a 200 million revenue. Key decisions makers here are the board, CEO, VP of Operations and factory manager. Company wants to spend lots of money on new equipment but there are several choices. Buy more of the same type of equipment? Buy used equipment which is cheaper but has no resale value. But on the other hand workers don't need training. Or new equipment which will be useful for longer and will overall produce more for the company over its lifespan and can be used to broaden offerings? Factory manager has a bonus program for next year so should he be making the decision? Or who do you think should make the strategic decision of what equipment company should buy?

That's possible but in this case I'd rather trust the scouts at the club than some randos on an internet forum. Odd opinion, I know.

But Ferguson looked strong and quick when healthy and seemed to have the technical and mental toolbox to succeed.

What i trust with Moyes is getting an 'Everton' type of player in. He gets the club and the fans. Eventually i see him leaving us as a manager and becoming a technical director.

So you would leave the transfers to the most experienced person at the club?

I think you have the wrong idea how things work. That technical director or what ever he is called doesn't do scouting. He doesn't come up with shortlists of players. He defines a strategy and gets the analytics and scouting guys to find suitable players for that.

Problem with managers is they rarely stay more than about two seasons at a club (that's about average length of a stint). Their incentive is to get results *now* so signing a 30-year old for 30 million could make sense to them. They quite likely won't be at the club in four years time when his successor has to think what to do with this now valueless player and how to replace him.

So I guess at your company the middle-manager who has been the longest there makes the big strategic decisions instead of the CEO and board?

Yeah, but we all know that wasn’t how it was with Moyes here. He helped lead a brilliant scouting team.

It helps when you can spend huge sums in transfer fees...of course for 60 millions plus you are extremely likely to get a decent striker. I just don't see TFG spending that kind of money unfortunately. I think there will be a couple of good statement signins with fees around 30 to 35 millions max. The rest will be free and cheap deals...looking for value. This increases the chances of getting it wrong, unless you have Brighton scouting network.

The West Ham fans including the reliable ones such as “ExWestHamemployee” who know more about them than either of us, lay the recruitment firmly at Moyes’ door. It was apparently a stipulation of him going there. That doesn’t exactly sound fanciful does it? We all know he’s hands on with recruitment and the strong rumour now is he’ll be hands on in recruitment again going forward here.

Clearly had very little input in January other than perhaps keeps saying no to the long list of players from thelwell. You can see on his face then how dissapointed he was at the end of the window, probably one of the many reasons why thelwell contract was not renewed. Not sure how keen he was on alcaraz either. I don't mind him having more of a say in the transfers. His record overall is more positive than negative...he is good in finding those value signings which he has done extensively here before but also at West ham.
