VAR

It's not a popular view but unfortunately I agree, the ref gave it for the foul by Maguire, VAR looked at it and thought the pull from Maguire didn't legislate the dive from Young and they passed that seed of doubt onto the ref

It would be interesting from.the AV whether they ignored the De Ligt pull, I suspect they focused purely on the foul the ref gave it for
But it doesn’t matter if Young makes a meal of it, you’re not allowed to pull a player’s shirt in any capacity. If the pulls from Maguire or De Ligt happened anywhere else on the pitch, it’s a free kick.

Michael Ball is bang on the money tonight in the Echo.

This “went down easy”, “made a meal of” and according to one whopper “defies the laws of physics” is nonsense too.

If you put pull someone back who’s running forwards then let go, they’ll fly forwards like a spring regardless of his legs flying up in the air.

That said, no hack in the media has a case to argue as they fall over themselves to explain why “it makes sense” that Casper the ghost two footed one of the RS every other week.

VAR isn’t the problem, the corrupt PMGOL is the problem and the penalty was the icing on the cake following a shambles of an officiating performance on Saturday

if what your saying is the case, it’s broken then, or corrupt, I think the latter.

Howard Webb we’re still all waiting
Probably still working on the narrative which we all know will be that maguire pull wasn't enough to warrant a penalty and that what was checked as referee supposedly saw the pull from maguire, not de ligt. Problem is that the referee probably saw a pull, but from his position he could well have been de ligt one that he saw and thought it was maguire. Everton should have released an official statement asking for official explanation, including audios, but nothing, just silence.

It was 50/50. Live I thought it very well could have been.

On replay, it's clear Young made a meal of it, and fell over once he knew he couldn't get to the ball (giving him benefit of the doubt - this is the equivalent of a grown man with momentum not running through an arm tackle, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt).

And the way he fell wasn't commensurate with the fouls

Like I said if that was given against us, it would be harsh. But yeah I think it's 50/50
It was definitely a penalty - no two ways about it, his shirt was stretched abiut a foot from behind, but agree with the manner in which Young went down, it was just ridiculous. I get people fall forward, when trying to move away like a catapult effect, but he jumped about three foot in the air with it

This wasn't even the referee's worst decision on the day btw.
The second half referee performance was a disgrace...I knew very early on that he was trying his best to give them an opportunity to come back...our yellow cards are a joke...united got away with only one card, and that was at the end of the match so that it is not too obvious. The initial free kick that hit doucoure's hand is not a fault. Their second goal was checked and validated in a matter of seconds by var. But the penalty at the end just was the cherry on the cake with regards to one of the most one side refereeing performance i have witnessed in a very long time. Still fuming and will be for a long time.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: VAR needs binning until we have officials who can do the job. The level of officiating the PL is shocking and the VAR farce is making it worse as referees hide behind VAR to mask any mistakes they might make, but the VAR officials just go with what their mates decide anyway. It would take no time at all to find 10+ stonewall penalties we’ve not been awarded since VAR came in, so what’s even the point of it? Whether the PL is corrupt or not, the incompetence on display each week only fuels the argument.

So what if Maguire didn’t foul Young? De Ligt did a split second beforehand, so why was that not penalised? How often do VAR checks look for fouls/offsides in the build up to goals? Look at Beto's ffs, they were scrutinising every possible angle available to them and yet for the penalty they are blind to any other incident in the build up.

The whole thing is a joke.

Thing is, Maguire did foul young. He clearly sticks his leg out and catches him.
