‘Big Disappointment’: James Garner Reflects on Wolves Defeat

Everton midfielder James Garner has reflected on Tuesday evening’s League Cup defeat to Wolves.

The 24-year-old was one of just four regular starters to maintain his place for the fixture.

Moyes made seven changes to his usual starting XI in an experiment that backfired as the Blues fell to a 2-0 defeat.

Speaking of the difficulty of playing in an XI with such wholesale changes, Garner said: “Of course it’s a challenge. There are a lot of familiar faces but at the same time there are a few new faces as well.

“There were a couple of lads who aren’t up to full fitness yet, they’re not 100%, due to lack of playing time but I’m sure that will come.

The first half wasn’t good enough, but we definitely showed glimpses of what we have been at the start of the season in the second half.

“I think any tournament or cup you enter, you want to go as far as you can so to go out now, playing against a team who we probably thought we’re in a better place than at the moment form-wise, and going in the right direction, so to lose is a big disappointment.

BLUES MUST GET BACK TO WINNING WAYS V WEST HAM ON MONDAY

In the build-up to the fixture, captain James Tarkowski had spoken about Everton’s cup ambitions.

However, this wasn’t reflected in the starting XI that Moyes put out for the trip to Molyneux.

Indeed, such an ignominious exit from a competition we supposedly had eyes on is a ‘big disappointment’.

However, the key now is to not let it derail the progress we’ve made so far this season.

We’ve played some decent stuff and it has been a positive start to life at the Bramley-Moore Dock.

Some of our new recruits have hit the ground running, but it’s clear that others will require patience on behalf of the fans.
