Everton Must Prioritise Cup Success this Season – Opinion

Everton must prioritise success in domestic cup competitions this season.

The Toffees travel to Molyneux this evening for a League Cup third round tie against Wolves.

The hosts currently prop up the Premier League table and are without a win in the opening weeks of the campaign.

Indeed, Vitor Pereira’s side have had a dreadful start to the season, with a goal difference of -9.

Presumably, the League Cup would pose little more than a distraction to a team in such dire straits.

This is perhaps reflected in the poor numbers of tickets sold in the home end ahead of tonight’s game.

With just 12,000 seats currently sold in the home sections of Molyneux, it is fair to say the Wolves faithful are showing little interest in this fixture.

Everton meanwhile will travel in numbers, hoping to progress to the next round as our desire success continues to intensify.

EVERTON MUST TAKE INSPIRATION FROM LAST SEASON’S CUP WINNERS

It’s a sentiment echoed by James Tarkowski, who recently reflected on the club’s ambition to end the drought.

The skipper insisted the Blues could take inspiration from last season’s domestic cup winners, clubs who are far from elite.

Newcastle’s League Cup victory prompted wild celebrations from the Geordies, and it is easy to see why.

Man hadn’t yet walked on the moon the last time the Magpies lifted a major domestic honour. A few runners-up spots in the 1990’s was their most recent period of ‘success’.

Crystal Palace had never won a major trophy, but lifted the FA Cup and Community Shield in a summer like no other for the Croydon club.

Everton’s trophyless run now scratches back over three decades, and is older than many of the club’s match-going fans.

For a club of our size, it’s simply unacceptable. At one time it would have been unthinkable.

We’ve been through the mire in recent years in particular, but light has emerged at the end of the tunnel in recent months.

The club finally appears to be moving in the right direction. Progress in the cup tonight would be another massive step forward.
