Newcastle United 0-1 Everton

Everton ended their 2024/25 Premier League campaign in style with a hard-fought 1-0 win away at Champions League-chasing Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

Carlos Alcaraz scored the game’s only goal midway through the second half, meeting Vitalii Mykolenko’s pinpoint cross with a clever header to send the travelling Blues into raptures. It was a deserved moment for Alcaraz, who’s shown flashes of promise since arriving on loan in January.

Despite Newcastle’s need for a result to secure their top-four place, it was Everton who looked more assured and determined throughout. Jordan Pickford – predictably – rose to the occasion on his return to the North East, denying the hosts and preserve a well-earned clean sheet.

In what was David Moyes’ final game of the season in charge after returning to Goodison in January, his side showed the grit and organisation that’s been gradually restored under his guidance. Everton finish the campaign in 13th – a position that seemed unlikely when Moyes took the reins.

With a summer of change ahead and the move to the new Hill Dickinson Stadium on the horizon, this final-day win was a fitting send-off. A clean sheet, a goal from a promising young midfielder, and three points on the road – not a bad way to sign off.
