Former Everton player Andros Townsend has now weighed in on the future of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford as the summer transfer window gathers pace.
As recently reported on GrandOldTeam, Pickford has been heavily linked with a move away from Goodison Park this summer, with Manchester United reportedly preparing a £45m bid for the 29-year-old.
However, Townsend, who was released by Everton earlier this month after a two-year spell at the club, has revealed he doesn’t think he will leave, though admits he is ‘not too sure’.
Indeed, speaking with talkSPORT, when asked about the future of the England international, Townsend said: “In terms of his future, honestly I’m not too sure. He signed a new deal so I think it would be the club’s decision on that one.
He’s got three or four years on his deal so if the club want him there I don’t think he’ll be going anywhere.
I don’t know the Financial Fair Play situation they’re under this summer but if they need to sell before they can buy then maybe they’re looking at £45m for a goalkeeper. It’s good business.”
Pickford has been one of the few bright sparks in an Everton shirt over the past few years and to see him depart would be a huge blow for the club.
Indeed, the £60m sale of Richarlison to Spurs last summer is still being felt by the Blues with both goals and creativity shockingly absent from Goodison Park last season.
Fortunately, Pickford’s heroics helped Everton maintain top-flight status, as his performances once again dragged the Toffees over the line to Premier League safety.
However, the club have rode their luck, and unless we begin to retain our better players, and recruit well in key areas, we will continue to struggle at the bottom end of the table.
Hopefully Andros is right in his assertion that Pickford ‘won’t be going anywhere’, but his immediate future remains unresolved.
