Mason Holgate believes Everton showed spirit and fight in the 1-0 defeat to Wolves and that this Everton squad shouldn’t be anywhere near the relegation places.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Holgate said: “It is what it is. There’s no hiding place. There’s nothing we can do about it. We’ve got to dig deep. As a performance if we look at it is was a lot better than Monday night. I thought we showed spirit and fight but ultimately when you are down there you have to pick up points. We’re disappointed but we have to start winning games. If we don’t start winning games we have to start not losing games.
On how low confidence is: “Confidence is not going to be high due to results and where we are but we have to believe in ourselves. There is nowhere to hide and it’s time to step up. It seems to be at the moment other teams keep nicking it and things aren’t going our way. Games are coming thick and fast and we have to stay consistent in our performances and stay strong. We can’t change what has already happened.”
On how strongly players want to avoid relegation: “Nobody wants to get relegated no matter what club you’re at or what the history is. If you look at the squad we’ve got we shouldn’t be anywhere near here. There’s no hiding that but we are and we have to deal with it.”
