The need for clarity and efficiency

A view on what Everton need to do, and quickly following the full time whistle on Sunday.

Poor Sam Allardyce.

He’s done as much as anyone could expect.

He took the club from 13th to 8th.

He saved Everton not only from relegation, but from eternal oblivion.

Who do Everton fans think they are? Evertonians should get back in their box and accept their patronising pat on the head.

Cast your minds back to November when Sam Allardyce “pulled himself out the running” for the job, explaining “I think when you’re sat in my position you want people to be decisive and feel like they want you. I didn’t quite get that feeling overall. They were hesitating that I was the man.”

Through his own admission, Everton didn’t want Sam Allardyce.

When he was appointed, he was an absolute last resort, no doubt with a view to getting to the end of the season before bringing in the man we want. That man at the time was Marco Silva, who had a clause at the end of the season that allowed him to walk away from Watford for £0.

No doubt Sam Allardyce will be vocal in a continued PR drive in feeling aggrieved, but he knew the gig and he’s been paid £6m+ for a few months work.

There’s no need at this stage to detail why Sam Allardyce, Sammy Lee and Craig Shakespeare aren’t the right men for Everton – Evertonians are overwhelming in their view, Everton know his position is untenable – lets not waste any time, as soon as the season is over, within hours move them on.

Appoint Director of Football.

Everton haven’t been a good advert for the director of football model.

Everton broke their transfer record last summer and recruited nine players, most representing a real lack of value or balance – a dismal return on the club’s £239million+ recruitment drive.

If Everton are to persist with a director of football model, we need to bring someone in who is an actual director of football.

It looks pretty certain that man will be Marcel Brands. If he hesitates, don’t arse about – move on to the next man – we need an aggressive transfer window and with the transfer deadline being brought forward and the world cup, there is less time than any other previous summer to do it in.

Clarity on Steve Walsh position.

Perhaps significantly – at Leicester City, Steve Walsh wasn’t a director of football.

It looks as though he’s been exposed in unfamiliar territory at Everton. His record prior Everton is very impressive, there’s a reason why Sir Alex Ferguson described him as the most influential person in the premier league – Steve Walsh can be an asset if retained in a scouting role.

Appoint Silva/Wenger/Fonseca/Conceição…

Whoever it is, get the new man in within days of the season finishing.

Hopefully whoever that man is has known he’s coming to Everton for some time and isn’t a short term flavour of the month.

Appoint New Chief Executive

Robert Elstone is widely tipped to leave Everton and return to rugby league after being approached to take up a role as the head of Super League.

The 54-year-old has been at Everton since 2005, initially appointed as Deputy CEO before being appointed Acting CEO in August 2008 and permanent CEO in January 2009.

Stadium update.

Perhaps not as immediately pressing, but a more tangible update on the stadium development would no doubt be welcome. What next? When can we see some shiny visuals with fireworks and clarity on financing.
