Player profile – Davy Klaassen

A box-to-box creative midfielder who knows where the net is.

At only 24, Klaassen has just completed his second season as captain of Dutch giants Ajax.

Something really lacking in the Blues’ ranks is leaders, so the arrival of someone with Klaassen’s qualities will be welcomed in L4 with open arms.

An established Netherlands international, it’s easy to see what Ronald Koeman wants with this man – goals and assists from the middle of the park.

33 games in the 16/17 Eredivisie campaign.

14 goals.

9 assists.

An exceptional haul, 8 goals greater than Everton’s closest challenger to Romelu Lukaku.

The first player to lead Ajax out in a European final since Danny Blind in 1996, Klaassen clocked up more assists than anyone in the Everton side last term.

Only one season, you say?

Here’s a stat for you.

Klaassen has been directly involved in 43 goals in his last 63 league games for the famous Amsterdam club.

Koeman will be first to admit it but his greatest weakness in what was his first season in charge of the club was winning away games.

Klaassen is a professional who is the not afraid of leaving home comforts behind.

He finished as the leading away scorer in the league with a grand total of 11.

In what has been dark times in the history of a one time elite footballing nation, Klaassen has been a bright spark for Oranje in scoring four goals in 14 games.

With Ross Barkley’s future up in the air, Steve Walsh and Koeman feel like they’ve identified the perfect player to replace Ross.

Davy is someone who knows how to win a trophy, with three league titles already – and he won the 2016 Dutch footballer of the year award.

Here’s to hoping he can bring his much needed winning mentality with him.

Up the Toffees.
