Liverpool Reserves 1-1 Everton Reserves

A Raheem Sterling equaliser 17 minutes from time cancelled out an Apostolos Vellios header on 50 minutes to give the teams a share of the points in a windswept mini derby at Liverpool’s academy.

The pitch was in fine condition as was the weather apart from a strong wind which was always going to cause problems.

Davie Weir appointed to Everton’s coaching staff after departing troubled Glasgow giants Rangers took his place alongside Eric Dier at the heart of the defence.

Magaye Gueye took 90 seconds to inflict the first assault of the early afternoon with a shot that failed to trouble Brad Jones who watched it go past the left hand post.

Jones again was called upon to make a save which Gueye crossed and Baxter was able to let fly with a rasping shot but Jones was equal to it.

Hahnemann was never troubled at this stage as Liverpool seemed to step up a gear forcing a couple of corners but Everton’s shot stopper was able to deal with them with ease.

2 minutes later reds number 7 Fernandez wriggled smartly into the box to send his left footed shot to Hahnemann’s right who went down comfortably to take.

There was nothing for the fans to get excited about as the game lacked clear cut chances which both midfields failed to create.

Forshaw who was probably the blues best player of the first half defended well as Liverpool started to insert pressure by being at hand to clear the danger and conceding a corner.

LIVERPOOL RES 0 EVERTON RES 0

No changes for either side at the break but hopefully the game needed something to make it interesting.

5 minutes into the second half it was the visitors that broke the deadlock with a lovely flicked header by Greek Vellios who was assisted with a fine run and cross from former Sligo Rovers starlet Seamus Coleman that left Jones helpless and give them the lead.

Liverpool were pushing to even the score line but Everton’s defence were doing their job, Fernandez was hopeful for a penalty going down in the box but Mr Kavanagh the match official waved it away.

Everton were looking to increase their lead and with a nice break and nice football the finish was a let down after Vellios, Gueye and Coleman were linking well put failed to convert.

Hahnemann had to come to Everton’s rescue as Weir was beaten in a tussle from red’s Eccleston after good work from Sterling down the left flank.

Liverpool got what they deserved on 70 minutes with a good attacking move and finish of quality. Eccleston helped his team mate with a cross to be admired that was precise for Sterling to blast beyond the despairing Hahnemann.

Again Eccleston continued to be a menace attacking Everton’s flank once more his cross this time was delivered to substitute Ngoo who could not match the service with a disappointing effort that went over the bar.

The home side could have took all 3 points at the death only for Ngoo once more to fail to execute as Hahnemann was able to push away around the post.

The U18’s Derby takes place at Liverpool’s academy with an 11am kick off this Friday.
