You'd have to ask Kay or TX tbh. As far as i know he's been good as ever.
Kay thinks he's been playing really well. So I trust that.
i actually dont know **** how was he this season...does he still have it in him
He was crap when he got back from us through May 2012. (Partially because I think he was sad he had to go back to LA to be totally honest). Then he went to the national team and did well, and came back to LA rejuvenated. June - August he went on an absolute tear. He got injured playing Mexico for the National Team, then sat out a bit. Then he came back and went on another tear...then went out with a hamstring injury... Came back for playoffs and looked like bread and butter with Robbie Keane.
Finished with 14 assists and 9 goals in the regular season, then added a few more goals and assists in the playoffs - taking him to his first double double (goals/assists) season since 2005. Aka, even with his kinda stop and start demotivated year, he had a year most other players would be praying for. He is also the lead chance generator in MLS by nearly double the nearest competitor (which is Robbie Keane - not a coincidence).
When he is motivated, he is still the best player in MLS. This year saw a couple of injuries due to several weeks of 3 games/week (we end up doing this a lot more in MLS since we play the first team more than rotate) + national team play. Plus, he got burnt out at the end of the year. I don't think that means he's injury prone - just showing his age a little, but he's played a lot more than Mirallas with his hamstring injury.
If he comes back, it means he's committed and will stick it through after a nice two month break. It means he will be refreshed and ready to go - which bodes extremely well for whichever team he's with in Feb. At Everton he has had zero problems with motivation.
The key point: due to his age and experience he will be more like the player we saw in 2012 than the player we saw in 2010: a playmaker and an assist generator. He will still score a few - especially if we play him up top with Jelavic - but he likes assisting and creating. That is a good chunk of the reason why Robbie Keane had a tremendous year starting in June. Still has pace to out run defenders at key moments - the counter attack usually. But has less pace for the full 90. Played the 2nd half of the year at forward with Keane, and looked solid. Would be an interesting rotation option at wing or forward.
Still has a few more years in him,
especially if we rotate through our players up top: Pienaar, Jelavic, Anichebe, Mirallas, Osman - all of them should see time. Being able to rotate between them would make our squad stronger and healthier.
Noises out of LA are that he is not retiring. As of yesterday this was the interview Bruce Arena gave to BeIn Sport:
FD: Landon Donovan?
BA:
As we get closer to reporting date we’re going to finalize where he’s headed this year.
FD: Sounds optimistic?
BA: You never know with Landon, so we’ll see.
1/18 is when camp starts. Though that's a Friday, so not sure what that means for reporting date. That's this Friday. Interesting wording choice on Bruce's part as well.
LA still wants Lampard, and they are still (rumored) pursuing a 2nd DP, which they wanted to be Kaka. No idea what this means for LD.
At this point I'm pretty sure he's not retiring. My main question is if he'll be suiting up for us or LA come 2/1. Don't see him going anywhere else.
EDIT: Good lord, didn't mean to write an essay.
