We've conceded less goals than the league leaders, and the same amount as Tottenham. They score more goals and put games to bed which is where we can't compete currently.

Man U have fecking van persie, hernandez and rooney. It's not a model we can follow. And it's not the only way to win things.

I maintain that getting in players who are ten percent better than pienaar, Fellaini, jelavic and Osman so we score an extra goal a game is going to be really hard. But getting in players who are ten percent better than Howard, Distin and Heitinga so we concede a goal less a game is less so.

Couldn't have put it better myself, which is why I didn't.

Moyes has never struggled finding cheap players on the attack or in defence. He bought Jelavic for less than Heitinga. He bought Cahill for less than Distin.

But that argument is neither here nor there. I'm just saying what we need, not whether we can afford it or not.

Agree with Brennan here. If we'd conceded many more than teams around us maybe you'd have a point but we havnt. Our problem has been getting the goals our displays have deserved. We never get out of sight and finish games off. Therefore our defense are always on a knife edge.

We need players to kill games off and maybe another midfielder who may than allow for a bit more energy and protection for the back 4.

Man utd have players that are 10% better than the ones u stated yet have conceded more than us???
Your point works both ways with utd as an example

Exactly.

Our defence is not noticeably worse than the teams around us, the big disadvantage we have is not scoring enough to kill games off. You can't legislate for scrappy goals or bits of luck that teams will get against you, but what you can do is score more goals so that those moments don't matter.

I wouldn't say Distin or Baines deserve to be dropped from our starting 11 but it was they who were at fault for the goal we conceded against Newcastle.

The same thing happened last season too. Go back and look at the number of goals we conceded compared to teams near us in the league. We didn't concede loads more, but we were generally far behind on goals scored.

There are far more goals to be gained via improved attacking play than there are goals to be saved via better defending. The numbers back that up.
