Youth academy prospects

Erm... England midfielder Jack Rodwell?

England striker Wayne Rooney.

James Vaughan has been bagning them in at the championship level too, always thought he would of done better if ti wasn't for injuries. That's 5 who are/have been playing reuglarly in the premier league in the space of 10 years though.

It's not really a question of whether or not we can produce world-class players imo.
It is a question of producing players capable of being in the first team so we don't have to spend money on second-rate players.
That is a sensible approach given our financial state.
Hitzlperger was free, but that place should have gone to a youth player so they could gain valueable experience. As we have seen, there are a few ok players to come from the academy, though not world-beaters. (Akpan, McManaman). Once upon a time we also released Jagielka and Barton...

Moyes was always good at filling the bench with U21 players, but you could bet your house they wouldn't get a single minute on the pitch. I hope Martinez will utilize the youngsters to a greater degree instead of using second-rate squad fillers.

I thought Kenny was a right back/centre back? Also in the year below Walsh appears to be a very talented player with quick feet.
Difficult question I know, but how do those 4 central midfielders compare to what Barkley was like at the same age?

Aye Kenny is a rightback and has played centreback (odd given his very small frame!)

Haven't seen much of Walsh, but I know he's been in the England U16 squad for the Nordic Tournament recently.

I didn't actually see much of Barkley when he was in the U18s, because while his year group was in the U18s, he was playing in the Reserves, not to mention his leg break. But he was set apart by his stature, he's over 6 foot now and was already using his strength well then; these new lads aren't as physically developed as Barkley was.

It was obvious, when he did come back though for the odd game (Remember him playing some part at Carrington when we beat United 4-1 or 3-1) that he was above anyone on the pitch with his vision, 2 moves ahead of everyone.

Hey swisso. Do you not think Stones, Kennedy or Duffy will make it ?

Haven't seen enough of Stone.

Kennedy is reminiscent of McFadden; head down, dribble past one, past two. Lose possession. Very one footed. But he's only 17/18 now.

Duffy, who knows? I've seen about as much as him as anyone on here and we've all got our opinions on him. Needs a chance to prove himself here.

Add Daniel Fox to the list, and did we add John Ruddy as well?

Hey swisso is there any picks of the bunch like any young uns heads and shoulders above there age group as the was with barkley?

I wouldn't say there's anyone who's a standout performer, but it's quite a good team. Ryan Ledson could be a very good player. I think he's probably the more talented of the bunch.
