2025/26 Youssef Chermiti

….i see this view posted lots but young footballers have to earn game time. If we take your approach we have to play all our young players in the PL to let them develop. Just imagine.

It’s a results business, we’ve struggled with strikers during his time here. Any manager who thought he was remotely the answer would be desperate to have him involved. Remember DCL breaking through and showing he could be effective at this level, he forced his way in. It’s what young players have to do, seize the opportunity.

Yes it's a results business, but if we didn't plan on using the kid at all then why did we bother? Players can't force their way in if they don't get any real chances (in their correct position), which he hasn't. The U23s don't develop anyone, no player over 18 should still be playing at that level really.

Like Moise Kean before him we've messed up the lad's development and seem too quick and happy to write him off.

Pensioner in Zats book.
Tbf I’m setting bait, I said back in Feb in last seasons thread i ‘feared for his top flight future’ due to the long term nature of his injury at that age, by which i meant as a prem player. That opinion was ridiculed ‘as he’s only 20’ and was interpreted as me saying his careers as a footballer was over.

Im just waiting for those same people to roll up this season and say he was always crap and missing all that development had nothing to do with his eventual sale to a Div 2 Portuguese team. :coffee:

….i’d have genuinely preferred him to be a success if I’m honest.
That's more a dig at the people that would use Chermiti as one of Kev's 'succesful' signings purely because he wasn't Neal Maupay or Jack Harrison.

We had limited money at that period and it was a fairly large outlay for someone so unproven (before anyone starts, it was probably low deposit, but it still needs paying)

Alright Souness. Calm down.

….I presume you’d now like to see him starting against Leeds and maybe playing the next 10 games as central striker so he can develop. Just imagine that approach

Yes they need to earn it. And no it doesn't need to be at Everton. But young players do need to play. That he's 21 and, mostly because of injury, hasn't played many first team matches doesn't bode well for his future.

But I think more to your point, the Everton first team is not a developmental team. Yes players can improve in the first team, but they need to prove they're better than the alternatives at the club. This is just speaking generally.

The bar then was incredibly low though, has to be said
Of course 🤣 Not hard to make Jack Harrison look like a limited football player

But I like to think I can still spot a player regardless of the frame of reference (I may be wrong here) and I personally think he looked good enough to be a squad player for us, subject to development

Question I suppose about what we think is best for his development: playing regularly for a worse side in the Championship, or training every day with better players and getting some minutes off the bench in the Prem with occasional starts in cup games etc.

We haven't been in a position to offer him the latter route until now... Been hard to develop young talent at Everton over the last three years

We haven't been able to develop any good young talent because of this - are never ahead in games or comfortable enough in the league table to provide a proper platform for a young player to come in and make mistakes.

What 19/20 year olds would have come in and tore the ground up at Everton in the last few years? Non footballing variables count for a lot, the atmosphere at the club has been poisonous for too long

Neat and tidy isn’t he but literally next to zero actual threat from him.
He's made zero impact. Yeah, injuries... but timing is everything and the club needs players on the pitch who have an impact. The days of waiting forever for potential are over. I'd like to see a more ruthless Everton from here on in. We're not a charity. We persevered with DCL when it was clear to a one-eyed man that he'd never be a solution for us. Now, he's headed for Leeds...which basically vindicates those who took that ruthless view.

To me since injury - flashes of a bit of skill, but very lightweight for a CF .....

I think he will get chances this season .
I doubt we will be signing another striker.
For the limited opportunities he’s had I think he shows a lot of promise. His injury has hampered his development, but there is definitely a player in there . Potentially an extremely good player .
