Worst Transfer Window Ever?

Dont know why we bought Mason Holgate other than the fact Stones was from there...Martinez said hes played 20 games in League one yet Matt Pennington has played 30 odd at Coventry winning young player of the year and runner up POY so he deserves a chance first. Pennington may not get the attention Tyias gets but is a better reader of the play and solid in all facets which would lead to less mistakes. Surely he deserves a chance this year before we buy and promote other untried youth trained at league 1 clubs with league 1 coaches.

2010/11 stands out in my memory as particularly poor, where Jermaine Beckford was our biggest and best signing with Magaye Gueye, Jan Mucha and Joao Silva making up the rest of our incoming purchases then in January we picked up Apostolos Vellios and sold Pienaar. So no in comparison to that I don't think having a top tier young talent that walks straight in to the team in Deulofeu, a solid squad player in Cleverley and two solid prospects in Henen and Holgate coming in with a few weeks left of the window counts as the worst window ever, no.

The one after that was worst! Summer 2011. Deadline day arrives... we sell Arteta, Beckford (our top scorer!) and Yak for a combined £13mil, then got Drenthe and Straq on loan. AMAZING TIMES.

I know it looks dire and we wish that we'd gotten all of the signings in before the season started but we are not even halfway through August yet and Bobby is still saying he wants 2/3 players in. The players that we got in are all very good signings for next to nothing and if the likes of Stoke and WBA are spending big we really must have money to spend, Roberto is just being very picky and the board are probably haggling.

Appreciate this may not seem like the worst window in recent years (2011 was a real low point), but for me it is right up there so far.

It's all about how we spend in comparison to other teams. In the previous years mentioned above we didn't spend much, but neither did anyone else (apart from the money clubs). However, this season everyone is spending big apart from us.

Does everyone really think Martinez is carefully biding his time in the market waiting for those perfect 3 players (including the mythical no.10)? Of course he isn't. He can't bring anyone in because we don't have any money.

It's like summer 2013 when ellstone said "we don't need to sell Feli to bid for McCarthy". In a legal sense this is true. you can legally bid 4mil for Messi if you like, doesn't mean it will be accepted though. We all knew this was rubbish and 48 hours later we sold the big lad for 27.5mil and brought in McCarthy for half of that (never to see the other half again!).

In my opinion we are waiting for deadline day to bring in some bargains on the cheap (evans, lennon etc). Of this will change if Stones is sold, which I think he will be.

That is why this summer is up there with the worst for me.

I think that one got glossed over as we went from relegation battling to finishing fourth but it was still very demoralising at the time at far sadder than this one!

But it actually goes to show how ridiculous some people are being about this window. We've signed two very good players, one a potentially fantastic player, to add to a very good young squad, there's just under 3 weeks left of the window and the manager has stated he wants another 3 first team players.

The hysteria by some has been amusing at times but it's pernicious posts by the usual suspects that cause the problems, blanket bitter statements with no basis cause the toxic atmosphere.

Spot on mate, add to that we've tied Mirallas and McCarthy to new contracts.

I think there was one window where we signed two players, one being the Everton giant that is Eddy Bosnar.

Alright, the Rooney one turned out ok, but I'd love people to remember the context of that window...

We'd just finished 17th with less than 40 points. We got stuffed 5-1 or something like that by Man City on the final day of the previous season. We lost the best player to arguably ever come out of our academy for £27m or whatever it was, we bought Marcus Bent for £700k (a journeyman striker) and Tim Cahill for £1.5m (a centre mid who had never played above Championship level).

If anyone thinks this window is more depressing than that one was at the time, they need their head testing.

The Arteta one was also soul-destroying and led to the worst 4 months or so I can remember in recent history as far as the football we've played goes

This window hasn't been great, but there are two and a half weeks of it left and we've not sold anyone and we've brought in two good players in bargain deals and two promising kids. Alright, we need more than that but it's a million miles away from being in the league of those two.
