Still first in the table by quite a bit.

Is it bad luck, or is there something deeper going on? It's no surprise that our horror run last season coincided with a rash of injuries, and once we got a bit of fitness we returned to form. People were quick to blame EL but forget that we had so many players out injured the first half of the season.

Either way we're going to have to do something to address this. With our budget and squad size we can't afford to be the most-injured team every season and expect to make any progress.

Kone, Oviedo couldn't be helped. Gibson well yea we knew he was injury prone and that's why we got him cheap. Then add Mirallas's occasionally operational hamstrings and there's most of your injuries right there. Also many of these players are internationals now which doesn't help. Being more of an attacking side and being on the wrong side of tackles probably doesn't help either.

Last season the number of dislocated shoulders was unusual, this year unfortunately seen a spike in ruptured ACLs.

@BenDinnery: Danny Ings becomes the third PL player within a week to rupture his ACL. Sixth player in 2015/16. Last season there were eight

Quartet On Comeback Trail

Roberto Martinez says Everton’s squad will be boosted by the return to fitness of four senior players during the busy festive fixture schedule.

But none of the quartet will be ready to face Newcastle on Boxing Day.

James McCarthy, Phil Jagielka, Steven Pienaar and Bryan Oviedo are all closing in on first-team comebacks, although the Everton boss explained it is unlikely any of them will be ready for the St James’ Park clash.

The four are, however, expected to play some part over the coming weeks as Everton fight on three fronts domestically.

The Toffees have to contend with three Premier League matches in quick succession, starting with the trip to the North East.

Home fixtures against Stoke City and Tottenham Hotspur then follow, before the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester City and the FA Cup third round meeting with Dagenham & Redbridge.

“We’ve had a real boost with the players coming back from injury. Steven Pienaar, Phil Jagielka, James McCarthy and Bryan Oviedo, I expect them to play some part in the next seven games.

“We’ve got seven games in the next three weeks, so it is a really busy period.

“But it is great news to have those players in a position where they have already started to work with the group.

“We feel very confident that, one way or another, they will be involved in those seven games as long as their fitness comes along with the work at the training ground.

“For Boxing Day, it is difficult they will get back even though we have got two sessions. What we need to make sure is that when they come back, they are match fit and can pick up the tempo.”

Martinez also confirmed that Steven Naismith missed last weekend’s defeat against Leicester City due to an ankle injury and that the Scotland man should have recovered in time to be considered for the Newcastle game.

The manager added: “Steven is going to train today and should be available for Newcastle. he had a bit of a niggle in his ankle and needed a bit of treatment and work.

“We’ve been doing that in the last six or seven days, so I expect him to be fit for the weekend.
