World Snooker Championship

It's interesting that Ronnie's 44, but actually there has been a marked trend of WSCs getting older in the last decade. It used to be that players dropped off quite quickly once past 30 (Davis and Hendry), but players have been going on much longer these days. Williams won in 2018 aged 43. Bingham was 43. Selby is 37 and looks like he has more titles in him.

I think Ronnie can easily win another title, maybe even more than one more, but it won't be easy. This year wasn't at all easy - the came within a whisker of going out to Selby, remember. He usually goes in around 2/1 - 3/1, so he should win once every 3 or 4 years. He might win again next year, but bookies aren't stupid - odds are odds and they suggest that back to back titles would be quite unexpected, even for Ronnie.

Quite right he plays the game for enjoyment only hence he he so unpredictable......upto last night in snooker earnings alone he was top of the charts with a cool £11 million - aside last nights earnings - he also has other outside interest running etc - tbf with his talent it must be only his desire if he wants to win a tournament or not!
He is a pure genius with the cue using both hands left or right in such a difficult game - he's right about comparing it with golf as both games are about delivering an action in a straight line .......

It’s because the young players are poor. The game is actually dying at grass roots level. Kids prefer video games.

Yes, there is definitely a case to be made there. I can't pretend that I have any deep knowledge of the game, but I can observe from my own eyes that Snooker halls have disappeared in most areas. It's not a growing sport, at least not in the UK which has set the standard in the past. No player is bigger than the game, but I do think the popularity of the sport will take a marked nosedive once Ronnie finally hangs up his cue.

What he said about crowds makes me think if everything is back to normal next year it will be a lot harder to win. I hope the lure of matching Hendry will overcome that but one thing I'm 100% convinced on is that he can't go another 5/6/7 years now before winning the next one. Like you've put his insane talent married to a poor field once players like Selby/Robertson/Trump/Ding have been knocked out has enabled him, Higgins and Williams (i think Bingham was just a fluke tbh) to win well into their 40's. To do this at nearly 50 would be super human stuff.

Prob true but standard of top 50 players is far, far higher than it was for Steve Davis, say.

Davis was a lot more dominant than ROS, he defined the elite game, but he was cueing against a lot of alehouse players. Fellas who could just pot the balls.

This is Trump's time to excel if he wants to go down as more than a flash in the pan. The game needs him to be a success more than it needs Ronnie, as he is so old now. Young, fresh faces are needed, but they seem woefully thin on the ground.

If China does eventually start winning the bulk of the tournaments, will this have a knock on its appeal in the UK?

I still think the game peaked late 90s/early 2000s when the class of 92 were establishing themselves, Hendry was still a force and, later, when the likes of Hunter were coming through. Guys like Matthew Stevens and Stephen Lee were also very, very good players. A lot of the time we forget how good they were.

The thing most likely to happen if we keep getting Chinese/other Asian winners will be that the world championship will have to be at somepoint held over there. Whether that has a negative effect I don't know, might spur some on to try and get it back.

Maybe - doubt it though. I was playing at a snooker club in Glasgow and the snooker room was completely empty. Everyone was playing pool and drinking next door!

They missed me amass a heavy scoring break of 20-odd lol

Went to play a few practice frames this afternoon, on the next table to me was a young lad who was with his dad. The lads name is Jamie Williams and he has just turned 8 years old... aside from his repetitive skill development practice today he also likes to play a frame or two in between drills, today he knocked in a break of 49.... ran out of position so played a lovely safety shot which forced his dad to make a mistake, Jamie then knocked in another break of 21 straight after. He’s currently ranked in the top 5 in the under 14’s age group in wales ... that’s scary at 8 years old. It was a pleasure to watch him practice.
