World Snooker Championship

I thought this might be a whitewash - but I wasn't sure which way.

Selby is the only player on the planet who knows he has O'Sullivan's number - some of the time. Ronnie knows that too. John Higgins used to be similar, but Ronnie has him in his pocket now. Selby is having an appalling season - he's not the player he was and he won't win this tournament if my take on him is remotely right - but I had a sneaky feeling he badly needed a match with Ronnie to get his juices flowing again and regain some confidence. He remembers who he is against Ronnie.

It's all moot anyway. These two have only one thing on their minds: Sheffield. But this certainly makes the run up to the Crucible intriguing.

By the way, that result tonight means that of the last 18 frames O'Sullivan has played against Selby, the score is 3-15. Granted, the last encounter was in December 2020 at the Scottish Open final, but nobody takes 15 of 18 frames from Ronnie without having a method or psychological edge.

Sullivan beat him in the shanghai masters 10.7 in September
Ah yes - good point! From 7-7, too, if I remember correctly. The WST web site mislead me - saying it was their first meeting in over three years.

Nevertheless, Selby is one of the very few players in the game who is not beaten by O'Sullivan before the first break. Funnily enough, I think Selby is good for O'Sullivan: keeps him on his toes. Every hero needs a foil. Batman v The Joker Jester.

Wasn't a ranking event so they might not have counted it.

So, Carter v Allen and Zhang v Selby.

I'll go for a Carter-Zhang final with no real conviction. I suspect Selby - who has far more important/worrying things to be concerned about off the table - won't maintain the focus required to play at his usual level and he'll revert to this season's usual level. I fancy Carter to pip Allen. I suspect Carter enjoyed Selby's 6-0 win more than Selby did...
