I swear the Winter Olympics came about because a bunch of people were sitting in a room discussing different ways to seriously injure someone and decided to just create a bunch of sports out of it
Some of it is the same as the summer Olympics, in that roots of the sports can be traced to military practices. Now I'm not saying there were many half pipe showdowns in the winter war (1939) nor a great deal of requirement for some ice skate dancing, but games and events evolve.
The big jumps and the distance on ski's off the long jump thing do seem like prime areas for neck snapping injury though.
