if you're on the meter, make sure you always have plenty of gas, you can survive without electric if you have to but keep warm!

Don't wear a bikini .
Or shorts . Or any summer wear , really . Flip-flops , and that .
Pay the gas .
Do , start your own Rock Salt / Gritting business . Begin in Liverpool 5 .

when putting on all your layers to go out in the snow, bear in mind that when you need a wee you have to be able to get it out, and usually in a rush.

a hot water bottle on a frozen pipe, or against a pipe that is likely to freeze, you can even recycle the water to use it again, or take it out with you for when the first one happens....spillage will occur though so probably best to carry a funnel as well.

glue some of the roughest sandpaper available to the soles of your shoes, that way you can get around the grit shortage that has left footpaths icy, running spikes would do but would be too cold, golf shoes maybe, garden aerators probably best.

beware of lids with ice picks and axes in north face gear, they are just using the weather as an excuse to carry them, and will undoubtedly mug you for your bread and milk. garden aerators with a roundhouse kick should see them off.

dont be tempted to do a billy connelly on the front lawn, as you are just asking to get locked out. if you must, then take your phone for when you need me to let you in / pick up sharpy, goat, danny and take some pics for the random photo thread.

Wear golf shoes with metal studs, they grip the ice every time

I also recall that people used to use potato slices to defrost windows, it works try it.

The advanced forecast is saying this is likely to be on for another week.........................just waiting the thaw when you'll truly find out the winners and losers

Or if you don't have golf shoes, grab a pair of these:

You're right. I couldn't ever recommend using washing-up liquid. Vinegar is and has been a staple of cleaning windows for at least a hundred years. Plus with preventing water from freezing makes it a no-brainer if you are cheap, in a pinch or just don't want to use the chemical mixes that are commercially pushed on us to use.

I can give Los Angeles winter advice. You might want to wear real shoes instead of the sandals that you wear for most of the year. It will rain maybe 7 days out of the 3 months of winter so be prepared to take off work so you can watch movies and drink coco. It will then get really hot for about 2 days and then it will settle to the normal perfect weather to cruise with your convertable down or windows open.

:D:D:D Oh to be in LA right now

Can you provide evidence of this m8, as I've not come across this before. It would be interesting to see on what grounds.
I was aware that they weren't compulsary like they are in many European countries, but not their legality.
Cheers. (y)

Good question - teach me to shoot my mouth off..

My understanding is that it's illegal to drive with anything on your tyres that will damage the road. That means in practice that you can use snow chains to get from say home/work onto a gritted road but - once you're on a cleared road - you have to stop and take them off as they'll chew the road up.

My daughter's partner is a regular skier and has a set of chains for his trips to The Alps. In the UK, he uses them to get up the hill, out of our village and on to the main road but then stops and takes em off. Where there's snow, the chains do no harm to the tarmac.

That's all I've got

The AA or RAC websites might help or The Dept of Transport website
