Wigan Athletic go into administration, becoming the first English professional club to do so since the coronavirus pandemic.

Wigan Athletic have gone into administration, becoming the first English professional club to do so since the coronavirus pandemic.

The club has been struggling to manage its finances and have been left with no alternative other than to take action to try to safeguard the club.

The move may see the Championship side handed a 12-point deduction.

Paul Stanley, Gerald Krasner and Dean Watson of Begbies Traynor have been appointed as joint administrators.

The first of many I fear, let's hope they survive. They'd had a great run of form to pull away from the relegation zone, a 12 point deduction would put them 4 points from safety.

I'm sorta hoping this is karma for Kone and Alcaraz. By the same logic Southampton (Cuco), Swansea (Siggy), Palace (Bolassie) and whichever Russian league team we signed crazy legs Niasse from are next. Fingers crossed.

Surely the 12 point deduction rule will have to be relaxed for the time being.

Two of our ex players Robinson and Williams are there of course, together with Kieran Dowell on loan to the end of the season. They are now bottom of the Championship, hopefully they can survive the drop and survive as a club.

You’ve got to think so! Absolutely mental if they deduct twelve from about 10-11 teams, half the teams will basically be getting a play off advantage.

Hardly a surprise. It was only Wheelan's money keeping them going. Once he died it was always going to go wrong. They're a third tier club if left to their own devices.

You would hope so, but if it's in the rules then maybe there's not much that can be done.

He’s not dead though.

They’ve been flying for a few months now, I hope they can keep it up and stay up even with the deduction.
