So I bought my daughter an Ipod Touch that can get internet by using wifi.
The problem is, we seem to be all cable in our street, so she can't connect.

I was thinking if I was to create a wifi connection for her on my pc, by buying the right equipment, it might keep her happy.

I've never used wifi before, so is this something I can do cheaply?

What equipment do I need?

Cheers.

We've got wireless broadband with Orange. If you're on cable I'm not sure how it works. Wireless routers arent expensive but I dont know what you do with them.

Sorry that was a pretty worthless response

Yeah like Fozzy said just get a router. Easy enough to set up, just put your ethernet cable into the back of it, then either another cable from that to your pc or use the wireless yourself, makes no difference (but your pc either needs to be wifi enabled already or if not then you just buy a bluetooth dongle thingy).

Then your daughter can use her ipod, presumably its already wirteless enabled so if she searches for connections it should pick yours up.

Just follow the instructions when you get it and off you go, simple.

So the wireless goes inbetween my cable and my pc.

Will this give me a security problem then, or will I have a password on it that only my daughter can use?

Also, if I'm gaming, and my daughter uses my internet too, will I suffer any issues, or is all ok?

Presumably I can then put my other pc upstairs, and use it too. What equipment do I need to buy for that pc?

How do I know if my pc is wifi equipped?

Sorry for all the questions.

I hate the wifi i have in my phone, it takes ages to open GOT during the match. People don't have to set passwords too..sharing is caring people!!

All the wireless router does it allow other devices to connect to your modem, just through a wireless medium ( the router converts the info and receives/broadcasts the info to and from your cable modem)

You can encrypt the wifi signal, and so long as your daughter knows your key you are fine.

To use your other PC wirelessly you would need a wireless network card.

Any PC can be wi-fi equipped, just need the hardware.

And some recommendation for faster wifi, look for some guides on replacing the wi-fi router firmware with DD-WRT (www.dd-wrt.com | Unleash Your Router).

Try to get a router that broadcasts on the 802.11n spec, as it is the fastest. Most gear (ipods and phones) connect on 802.11b/g but as newer stuff comes out they are starting the support the n spec.

Unless your daughter is doing something crazy on her ipod (like streaming HD video) you shouldn't ever notice any effect of your internet experience.

Yeah.....

Encrypt your wi-fi. Unless you like people leeching your bandwidth. Or downloading kiddy porn on your ip address.

ENCRYPT!
