WHY ?

The suggestion is that the bid was a lot less than 12m. Martinez described the bid as derisory. I would guess that it was less than 10m.

He was on the phone to Bill Kenwright every day for eleven years,I doubt that he suddenly last his number, I would guess there were many conversations between Kenwright and Moyes where a valuation for Baines was discussed and I would suggest that Moyes himself set the figure a lot higher than 10m or 12m.

I think it showed a lack of respect for Everton and I don't(didn't) think Moyes is that kind of man.

Yes it is derisory.

The Bayern thing was only ever a rumour.

His value to the Everton side, what he offers, his stats in comparison to players across Europe.... he's is worth a lot more than £12m, especially when you consider the money spent by LFC on Carroll, Henderson, Downing, and City on Lescott & Rodwell.

Rodwell cost City £12m. Baines is a far more developed and better player than Rodwell.

City paid for potential with Rodwell. If he goes on to be as important a player as Gerrard or Lampard they will have got themselves a bargain. Baines is already in his prime.

I'd be disappointed if we sold our left back for £12m, but I'm playing devil's advocate. Leighton's going to be 29 before Christmas and he might only have 3 years left at the top of his game.

My view is that David Moyes gave a list of players that he thought could immediately improve the team. Baines would have been on that list. There's nothing wrong with that as he's the best left back in the league and one of the best left backs in the world.

The people in charge of transfer negotiations at Man Utd then probably had a meeting and determined that a bid of £12m was fair.

Once that was rejected, they probably approached Moyes and asked how badly he needed him. Moyes probably turned round and said £12m was never going to get him, and if the club didn't want to spend a lot more on a 29-year-old left back then it's probably worth moving on to other targets.

That entire process is completely reasonable. I don't blame Moyes one bit for Man Utd bidding for Baines.

That said, it was a derisory offer. It was at the very minimum only two thirds of his market value. Nobody on this forum would have accepted a £12m bid, and if Baines did go for £12m then every neutral fan in their right mind outside the Cultists across the park would have been calling it the bargain of the summer.

It seems people are determined to defend everything David Moyes even if it goes at the expense of logic.
