Player Valuation: £60m
I realise that we do not always understand the motivation behind certain actions in football.
When explained from a different perspective they can make sense.

However, what I really cannot understand no matter which way I look at it is why David Moyes(Utd) would make a derisory bid to Everton for Leighton Baines.

Moyes will have had a very good idea that Baines was unlikely to demand a transfer.I am sure that a private conversation must have been held at some stage between them to discuss their respective futures after Moyes was appointed Utd manager.

Moyes will have known that in spite of a shortage of money that Baines is the crown Jwel in the Everton throne and would not be sold lightly or cheaply.

I just cannot see the logic.

....all players have a valuation and Moyes must know what the tag is for all our players. It does seem odd that he didn't go straight for the known figure, but its a game of poker and he knows Bill's hand. Saying that he may think unsettling the player will get him on the cheap.

Is £12m that derisory? We were supposedly prepared to let him go to Bayern for £9m a couple of seasons ago. Tevez and Bony both cost £12m, so it's not chicken feed.

It's difficult to work out Moyes' transfer strategy at United. It seems like he's looking to get value to prove that he's a wheeler-dealer. £25m was his limit for Fabregas and £12m looks to be as far as he'd be prepared to go for Leighton. Maybe Davey gave the CEO a list of players he wanted and the Chief Exec decided how much he was prepared to pay for them? He's new in the job too and will be wanting to prove himself. I think that they do need a statement signing though to help get the fans behind the new manager. I've always though that Hamsik from Napoli would be ideal for them.

What do you expect from a man like Moyes? He knew he was going to UTD let contract run out cost us a fortune and then rubs salt in wounds with a micky mouse bid for Baines. The thing is Billy Liar will do business with the devil to get a few bob and a deal will be done regardless of the **** Martinez is saying about Baines not being for sale, him saying in the papers no futher bid was received for Baines is an invite for who ever is going to pay 15 mill for him. I still say at least 4 players will be sold in this window .

i think it wold take 20m to get Baines away. Luckily, Baines is a good, loyal player so I can't see him asking to leave.

Moyes can [Poor language removed] off with than derisory bid trying to unsettle Baines. The tactic didn't work. I tell you, Fergie quit at the right time. I say Utd are in a bit of a mess. Half their squad are pretty average

Yes it is derisory.

The Bayern thing was only ever a rumour.

His value to the Everton side, what he offers, his stats in comparison to players across Europe.... he's is worth a lot more than £12m, especially when you consider the money spent by LFC on Carroll, Henderson, Downing, and City on Lescott & Rodwell.

Rodwell cost City £12m. Baines is a far more developed and better player than Rodwell.

£12m for a LB who turns 29 this season would only be viewed as 'derisory' by us mate.

We know what he's worth to our side & therefore value him way, way above what would be considered as 'value' for a player of his age & position.

Moyes & United bid what they were prepared to pay for that player & we rejected it - that's it- the end

The explanation comes from an old PC called Championship Manager.

If you were taking a new job you could lower all the prices of your players and hope the AI didn't fix it before you got a chance to buy them. Moyes clearly played this game back in the day and is trying a clever yet underhanded tactic.
