The Belgian FA are irrelevant in this, and people underestimate the pull of this job. There’s only 20 PL jobs going at any one time, and ones with a billionaire owner are even rarer. We’ve already seen what Benitez would do to get back into the game. Martinez will be selling family members to try and get this job. We’ll pay him massively more, but regardless of that it’s the ultimate pamper for his ego to try and right the wrongs of last time.

Make no mistake, if we’ve made the call and we want him then I doubt anything is going to prevent him joining.

Kovac , Marche and Favre all available. Kenwright and Moshiri will have never heard of any of them though.

It’s a risk and availability question now though. Who is available and wants to take on the risk of turning things around mid season with a squad of players not his and probably no more transfers.

This is the problem with chopping managers all the time. We’ll end up appointing someone who probably isn’t our first choice because we’re desperate.

Its telling that Rooney and Lampard were not in the frame last year.
Last year we had finished comfortably mid table, were hoping to get into Europe in the near future, and our manager had left for Madrid. We’re now in a relegation scrap having had a very public implosion over the past number of months.

What is your honest opinion on Martinez second time around? Any different factors now that would alter the outcomes from his first stint?

I dont think think he'd be that more pragmatic. Experience brings that. But with him we'd still have defensive issues.

He'd certainly want to continue with a possession based game. This lot are frightened to death to get on the ball. It wasn't just Benitez's tactics that got us to 30% possession in games. And getting control of the ball again is what we need right now. So I think that may be the thinking of bringing him in...plus he's affable and a player's manager...apart from a snide like Baines.
