Missed a barrowload at Goodison and there has been rumours of the integrity of the officials in Athens,I posted in the classic matches thread the second leg a while ago,the footage of Alan whittle being totally wiped out in the penalty area is unbelievable,he’s about five yards in the box and he gives a free kick outside the area!!!How did we lose that tie
Me and my mate went to the that game at Goodison, like you said we should have won that match standing on our heads but the ball just wouldn’t go in and it was only in the last minutes that David Johnson got the equaliser. Going to to the game me and mate said as soon as it is three nil we are off home to watch the recording of the first Ali v Joe Frasier championship fight, which had taken place the night before, we eventually got home in time to watch the fight in my mates sisters house. My mate had stopped himself from knowing the result, I knew, both Ali fans, my mate had a double disappointment that night, Everton and Ali’s defeats put him on a real downer, and me, but I had all day to get used to Ali’s defeat. Then we got robbed in Greece and got beat by Liverpool in the semi final on the Saturday for another double defeat. Never rains but it pours being a Bluenose.Missed a barrowload at Goodison and there has been rumours of the integrity of the officials in Athens,I posted in the classic matches thread the second leg a while ago,the footage of Alan whittle being totally wiped out in the penalty area is unbelievable,he’s about five yards in the box and he gives a free kick outside the area!!!
I think we beat United either the week before or a week later in the away game at Old Trafford 1-0 with a penalty from Roy Vernon about ten minutes from the endStill have the odd look at that game now

Yep,they were a great team,as ever with us it is always ifs, buts and maybes, however, the final was on home soil at Wembley that year,I would imagine even allowing for Ajax's fine support we would have taken over Wembley,as you say on the night, who knows? Is right, Dario, but we were in very uneven form that season (to say the least) & and I'm not sure we'd have had enough to deal with Neeskens, Rep and Cruyff in the final. Who knows?!
Me too K.. we were blessed to have "The Last Of the Corinthians" as skipper werent we. I think in Joey's earlier post in his Old Everton Pictures thread (Echo front-page re Bally 27/9/69 - my 12th b'day... Jeez) it mentions Pele saying just how good Labby was. God bless his soul.
