The damage was done many years ago so Moshiri whilst not totally blameless for our current position should not be anywhere near a poll like this. People blame the ban in Europe but that seen the break up of that team, it should not have seen the club decline in the fashion it has. The old big '5' are still at the top end of the league, competing & making big money. I remember staying in the street end after one game to protest at that Dr David Marsh. It has been bad management for decades & as much as sometimes the stick Kenwright gets is a bit harsh the one thing I cannot forgive him for is allowing the Moyes narrative of 'punching above our weight'. This is hampering us big time as we have become insular with our past achievements as if patting ourselves on the back but in the national spotlight acting small time. Daft things annoy me such as season ticket promotions such as 'we go the game' & Liverpool one Everton two nonsense little digs at LFC who couldn't care less. We can spend this new money all day long but we will not gain any respect from outsiders until that new ground is built & a clean sweep at boardroom level is moved on. We need to employ real top of the tree staff who excel in their departments on & off the pitch instead of the Kenwright influence of sentimental appointments. We really have to start being cute & controlling the future narratives in the media as perception & image are massive in business. In other words the Kenwright regime despite some positive things such as EITC are at fault regards of missed opportunities both on & off the field in my opinion

I fear a return to these glory days may be forever beyond us.

Hysel started it, then Kendall leaving and since then the total mismanagement of the club.
There is bad karma surrounding us for whatever reason I have no idea why. As a result we have collectively become victims. Victims never move forward.
Simple really.

Agree mate. The 'We go the game' line is embarrassing as is the 'Once Everton has touched you nothing will ever be the same' What Alan Ball said is fantastic but shouldn't be wheeled out as emotional blackmail. Born not manufactured is annoying as well. Liverpool 1 Everton 2. We haven't beaten them in years. Like you say these are digs at our neighbours which just serve to show us as inferior and we are on and off the pitch.

What did the Taylor report do to screw us?

Well, when the Taylor Report came out Goodison was the best, most advanced stadium in the country.

A national newspaper published a “league table” of what was then the 1st Division clubs based on how much was approx needed by each club to bring their stadium up to scratch.....and EFC sat proudly at the bottom of that league table.

So we sat on our hands, a few tweaks here and there whilst the other major clubs started seriously renovating their grounds or starting to look toward building new ones.

To give an example, around 1990 or 1991 I recall standing on a crumbling terrace in an open end at Stamford Bridge with the rain pelting down on a Sunday afternoon and Tony Cottee missing a penalty as we exited the F.A. Cup 1-0.

But Chelsea were already thinking ahead and whilst Peter Johnson was taking control at our club, a man called Matthew Harding was buying in and the modern Chelsea was taking shape, the stadium unrecognisable within a few years whilst the Meccano set that is the modern Park End was taking shape up here.

The era of “Woodison” was upon us and as our stadium fell behind the other major clubs, so did our fortunes on the pitch and the two matters were not unrelated.

That's hardly the Taylor Reports fault is it? They should have lied to us to trick us into investing in the stadium?

That's the board, again.

The Big Five in the mid 80s were Liverpool,
Man Utd, Tottenham, Arsenal ... and Everton. Of those, Liverpool, Man U and Arsenal were all regarded as richer and more successful clubs than us.
Liverpool and Man U had vastly superior commercial revenues while Arsenal and Tottenham had a reputation for sound financial management. All four of these clubs survived to become part of the Big Six in the PL era, along with Chelsea and Man City who both had bottomless pots of money thrown at them.
So the Big Six each have at least 2 of the 3 attributes needed to qualify for entry to the elite
1. Huge commercial revenues
2. Sound financial management
3. Mega-rich owners.

We until relatively recently have had none of these. It will take time, hard work and some luck to get us competing with the Big Six.
Unfortunately we don't show many signs of having the patience, hard-working mentality or, indeed, luck to progress.

"The toxic fan base"
Always creases me that

I mean, let's look at Madrid for an example, they literally smash their players cars up if they don't like them and they have just won 3 European cups in a row, biggest team in the world and their fans are absolutely putrid

We are crap because our board has been crap

No, it wasn’t the “fault” of the Taylor Report, nor did I suggest it was.

Just as Heysel was not the fault of the Everton board, but its effect on this club was palpable.

The Taylor Report provided a catalyst for major change in English football just as Sky entering the field around the same time and the invention of the Premier League did but EFC, or more specifically the “board” was gripped by inertia and the die was cast.

And as Mr. Peter Johnson was “the board” for most of the 90s when most of the damage was being done then it seems you do grasp at least some of what I am saying.

I am merely offering personal opinions as to the reasons our club has fallen from grace over the past thirty years or so.

It was not just one person’s fault nor was there one defining issue that caused it.....it was a combination of events over the course of ten or twelve years, not all of it but most of it during the tenure of Mr. Peter Johnson.
