Which is the better team?

The 95-96 finish 6th, this current team probably will too. It's not fair to say they got smashed every week.

The same team was in a relegation scrap in 95 and 97 so we did get smashed most weeks - we did well in 96 - one of the biggest mistakes ever at Everton letting big Joe walk away.

the 04/05 team had potential, it would have been even better if we would have kept Rooney.

The 04/05 and the 95/96 team are a lot more consistent than the 12/13 team.

A relegation scrap with walker which , as well as mounting a succesful cup campaign , joe walked us comfortably out of . We were pretty good the next year (which this is about ) missing out late on and then as you say struggled. I couldn't agree more with you on big joe & i know its probably unpopular but I hold him a lot dearer than moyes to be honest .

Current team full of internationals, the 95/96 team not so much.
If I was having a bet which would win my money would be on 12/13 team

The 12/13 team would be declared better if it made top 4 this season IMO, no doubt about it I even think next season's team will be better.

Aye i remember mate, just making the point that the majority of that team in 95 and 97 were involved in relegation fights, if we're going linear and just looking at 97 - id still go with today if im honest. Imagine City got relegated in 96. Bang on about Big Joe one of the biggest mistakes Everton ever made was allowing him away from the club, even today i would find a place for him at Everton on the footballing side. I think when Waggy took over that was the worst relgation fight - i dont think i could have bared it if Waggy had of taken us down after Big Joe walked away.

The competition for top 6 places is a lot stiffer now than it was in the mid 90s. It's important to take that into consideration when making comparisons.

Again i couldnt agree more One of my favourite ever everton players just for his heart and like you it'd have really hurt to see us go down under him.

Believe it or not I had the privilege to be present in the moat house on the day (could have been 2days ) before the ferguson goodison derby and watched joe speak to him for literally a couple of minutes . It certainly wasn't tactics or match planning it was joe 'motivating' Duncan and it was brilliant to watch . In another thread somebody was dismissive about motivation but if they'd seen that i'm confident they wouldn't maintain that position . I know that's probably just me rambling but the point is like you I think joe is criminally underrated .

Mike Walker eh?

He was certainly a manager wasn't he?

Great story mate, when it came to people he just had it, he was so quick witted as well and had great charisma everyone always played for him, hard to believe its almost pushing 20 years isnt it. I felt sorry for Waggy that year, like you say his heart made him do it, but he was out of his depth, it would have been horrible going down in that context. I still havnt forgiven Tore Andre Flo.

Big Joe is massively underatted for me, criminally by us, but wider football in general what City did to him was disgusting and despite the odd 6 months here and there he never got anywhere else - still love listening to him when hes on TV one of the nicest and most intekkgent football men out there - always for me should be involved with Everton - not just as a figure head either.

Assuming the 90's team was "upgraded" to the speed/fitness/training levels of modern day players ... that would make it a much tighter race ... but I'd still go with today's team. (If its just a time machine where we take this team back to then with no adjustment to fitness I think we'd not only beat our team from the 90's but probably win the league undefeated.)
