Where/when did it go all wrong for both Liverpool teams?

It does annoy me that man u are buying them selves out if trouble signing Jose and 200 million to spend

How can anyone compete with this

if they spend foolishly and continue to have poor seasons then the sponsorship deals and overseas support where that revenue from will start to shrink

united are essentially a fiat economy

I agree with a lot of other posters who cite Heysel as a possible turning point.Liverpool had been European champions several times in recent years before 1985 and we were,I'm sure, about to beat any European team placed before us.In the grand scheme of things, there aren't many trophies that have found their way to Merseyside since Heysel;certainly not compared to Manchester or London.I understand big money going into London at the expense of the northwest but not going into Manchester at the expense of Merseyside.
I feel sure that our time will come again and consider this;at least we aren't Birmingham or Villa fans!!!I feel sure that their time will NOT come again!

I don't remember as a teenager in the 80's that Manchester United where anything other than a rival and that we were at that time probably better placed to challenge for honours- Goodison wasn't selling out every game, but then neither was Old Trafford. Then just suddenly early 90's they had a very good young side (can't win anything with kids) that coincided with an upsurge in football coverage through SKY and it just went from there. Discussed this with a Man United fan at work same age as me and he remembers games against us when a point was a good result for them. He also believes they got a very good marketing / commercial management team in place just at the right time to tap into new found success under Fergie at the same time as pushing the global branding. All this with Old Trafford redevelopments and expansions.

First...doh
Second.

Were it all went wrong for us?? 1892 when we should've just wore the rent increase, worse case of false economy ever.

Not being re instated in to europe after the heysel ban never helped we where the team representing the english champions in the european cup when the ban took effect and this should have been honoured when the ban was lifted.

I think it's too convenient to put our decline all down to Heysel. Yes, it's obviously a factor, but it's also a handy catch-all for our failure. Who knows what would have happened had Heysel not occurred? The fact it did occur, however, allows us to claim dominance of a sliding doors football world.
I think we have slipped away because of complacency, lack of vision, lack of ruthlessness, and a series of poor decisions or non-decisions that have incrementally led us to where we are today. The board acted like gentlemen amateurs while other clubs got professional. We replaced top class players with the very good, the very good with the good, and so on until, in the space of a few years, we had the likes of Preki, Niclas Alexandersson, and Joe-Max Moore, instead of Trevor Steven, Kevin Sheedy, and Gary Lineker. We let the stadium rot. We failed to pursue commercial opportunities.
For the first time in decades, we now have a chance to reverse that decline, on and off the field. Let's hope the right, ruthless decisions are made.

Football changed and became more commercial. Man Utd developed their ground, sold their "brand" around the world and started signing commercial deals. They expanded their corporate boxes and lounges. This also coincided with Sky TV, and the audience for football around the world increasing, and them starting to win the league again.

The RS meanwhile had David Moores in charge, who did not see the potential. By the time they had figured out the commercial side of things, Utd had overtaken them massively.

As for Everton, we never had a global presence like that of Man Utd or the RS. The only place we went wrong is not being bought by a billionaire before Chelsea or Man City.

Post the Taylor report and when the Football Trust was set up to assist with the cost of making grounds all seater and developing new stands etc, we showed zero vision.

The likes of Ellis at Villa seized the opportunity and refurbed the entire ground. We put a single tier, out of keeping with the rest of the ground, cheap and cheerful stand up at the Park End.

If the club had seized that opportunity they could have built a new ground way back then, and we'd have not had the millstone of the ground holding us back for the next 20 years.

Oh and Heysel obviously.

When I seen the thread saying both Liverpool teams, I thought you meant were did it go wrong for the Liverpool 1st team and reserves.

Answer: They are both crap. Why ? I don't care why just relegate them ffs.
