I think it's too convenient to put our decline all down to Heysel. Yes, it's obviously a factor, but it's also a handy catch-all for our failure. Who knows what would have happened had Heysel not occurred? The fact it did occur, however, allows us to claim dominance of a sliding doors football world.
I think we have slipped away because of complacency, lack of vision, lack of ruthlessness, and a series of poor decisions or non-decisions that have incrementally led us to where we are today. The board acted like gentlemen amateurs while other clubs got professional. We replaced top class players with the very good, the very good with the good, and so on until, in the space of a few years, we had the likes of Preki, Niclas Alexandersson, and Joe-Max Moore, instead of Trevor Steven, Kevin Sheedy, and Gary Lineker. We let the stadium rot. We failed to pursue commercial opportunities.
For the first time in decades, we now have a chance to reverse that decline, on and off the field. Let's hope the right, ruthless decisions are made.
