What's Changed?

After letting another lead slip and witnessing what was, to put it kindly, an insipid second half performance, Evertonians were again left rightly frustrated. Stepping back and distancing myself from the usual go-to fume phrases, I've been trying to look objectively at why it just isn't quite working this year. Certain mistake patterns are emerging, and you could probably make a word document of the 5 biggest gripes with our performances of late, and just copy and paste them to describe whatever our latest match happens to be. So what's changed since last year?

Victims of our own success

Ourselves, and to a lesser extent Spurs and Liverpool, are in Premier League no mans land at the minute. We're better than the likes of Newcastle, Southampton (just watch them slide) and Swansea, but we're not quite as good as the big spending teams above us.

This has led to teams parking the bus, or more accurately placing two banks of four against us (see any home game this year and most aways too) and saying come on, play through us then lads. Last year, teams were more inclined to have a go at us, thus leaving more space for the likes of Lukaku, Mirallas and Barkley to exploit. Playing through two banks of four, regardless of who is included in those two banks of four, is a very difficult task, and one which only the top players can really do on a regular basis. Do people honestly think Southampton/West Ham would be sat where there are in the league now if teams had been parking the bus against them? Not a chance. If they keep it up till next year, you'll see the exact same thing happen to them. You need a Silva, or a Hazard, or a Mata to be able to beat the teams who set out to frustrate you, not the raw talents of a youngster like Barkley or the tired, much too slow legs of an Osman.

Tempo, passing, and players

If Martinez persists with the same formation, the same tempo, and the same possession based game, which history (and Wigan fans in particular) tells us he will, you simply need a better standard of midfielder. The game we currently play hinges almost totally on there being a door unlocker in the team - there isn't one. The tempo of passing needs to be much quicker, and the standard of player needs to be higher (more creative, intelligent, whatever) for the system to work. Languid, predictable passing gets you nowhere. A possession based game only works if the other team is frustrated by not having possession, who have we played this season who have looked frustrated by us having the ball? Nobody. Last year teams were afraid of what Deulofeu would do to them, we've lost some of the fear factor we had, and teams are starting to look very confident setting up against us.

You need a quick tempo and a sharpness of mind to make it work - it creates indecision in the opposition defenders minds, to the point where they're making silly mistakes. Taking the Barcelona of a few seasons back as the example, the defender knows that if he doesn't close down Messi/Xavi/Iniesta then
he'll either pick out a quality pass, or simply skip round him. There's no danger of any of Everton's midfielders doing this on a regular basis, and the opposition knows it.

The less technically gifted of our blue contingent keep making mistake after mistake this year, and of course when you have 70% possession in a game which attackers and midfielders constantly closing you down, they're absolutely bound to make mistakes. These players need to see the ball less, not more. They need to quickly turn play over to the players who are technically gifted. How often have you seen us tap it about 20 times only for it end up at Distin's feet? Punt.

Roberto

He's persisting with his beliefs on how football matches should be won to the point of arrogance, he's set his teams out the same way his whole managerial career, but what he seems to be missing is that you need a certain calibre of player to play it. He needs to be ruthless in the transfer market. He needs to tell the likes of Howard, Distin, Hibbert, Osman, McGeady, Kone and Alcaraz that their days are numbered, they simply aren't good enough to play the style of footy he insists on playing. It's worrying then that he's showing absolutely no signs of getting rid of any of them, quite the opposite infact, with many of them getting new deals.

Whatsmore, there's no plan B. Sometimes you need to get ugly to get points in the premier league, everybody knows that. Which leads to another flaw of Martinez, his ignorance of set plays and their importance. A point earned by a last minute header from a corner in a game that is a total scrap is every bit as precious as a point earned from having 70% possession.

Now Roberto does do an awful lot right, and his positivity is infectious. But occasionally you do need to call a spade a spade, and last nights second half performance was definitely a big, ugly spade that needed calling one.

Overall

It's obvious we don't have the money to go out and buy a couple of classy attackers like Silva etc, but there are cheaper options out there which are definitely within our range. Spurs bought Eriksen for £11m. Saints bought Tadic for roughly the same amount, and Sigurdsson for even less than that. There will be plenty more options out there in a similar range, and if Roberto insits on playing the way we're playing, he simply has to find one or two of them. If not, teams will continue to frustrate us and absolutely nothing will change - unless Roberto does.

I think you've made some very good points. We're definitely lacking that creative spark. We haven't really got anyone who is capable of playing regular through balls either. The likes of Osman, Pienaar, Barkley and Eto'o can do it every so often, but no where near enough. Players like Fabregas and Hazard will play more of them in a few games than all of those combined over a season. Hopefully Barkley will add the creative side to his game but at the moment, it's a no brainer between Naismith and Barkley as to who should be in the role behind the striker.

As you said, Martinez is being too persistent with sticking with the experienced players too. Browning came in for the Derby and against United and did well enough. Garbutt handled himself well at Wolfsburg. Distin just isn't working so he needs to do whatever he can to get him out of the first 11. Same with Osman. Osman is actually still capable of playing a part in the right type of game. West Ham being a good example. However, those games are very rare and there is no way he should be starting games regularly and staying on the pitch ahead of the likes of Besic.

The only point I disagree on is McGeady. He's not a starter, but he's got something to add to the team. He actually has pace and a bit of trickery that will be useful in certain games. Was very unlucky with that run he went on last night when he came on and that was better than anything Osman contributed all game.

Best post I've seen in this forum, clearly laying out the footballing reason that made us so dire at the moment.

We have been Sussed.
One thing they've sussed is Distin and Jags are [Poor language removed] with the ball, if you press them and rush them into a pass, chances are you win possession high up the pitch.

At least with Stones playing you get one CB that can bring it out of defence with a good pass or a run, quickly.

Coleman,Baines,Barry,Mirallas are not fully fit, three dodgy hamstrings/ and Barry not fully fit,add the fact the energy levels McCarthy and Naismith provide have been missing and the rest of them barring Besic were pretty awful, you get a performance like that, well thats last nights game analysed, don't get me started on the rest of the season;)

I don't think anything's changed really.

We're still a few points off Europe, we still have a heap of injuries, we're still fighting to keep our best players from being sold and we're still playing at Goodison.

Been like this for nearly 10 years.

Injuries

Pretty much Every game Chelsea have had Matic Courtois, Cahill, Fabregas, Oscar, Ivanovic etc. We haven't had a solid spine. I know it's excuses but we've not had a first team been able to gel. Lukaku, Barry, McCarthy, Baines Coleman, Jags have all been playing through injuries. Mirallas and Barkley and Lukaku are still not 100%.

Pressing

We sit back and sit back. Spurs' first goal was letting Harry Kane run at us like Lionel Messi. same with hull's goal. as the chelsea match. But we get pressed and the front four are disconnected which means

Centre Mid

We still don't have a centre mid driver - someone who'll go box-to-box. I thought Barkley would be that player but he still doesn't press often just stands still. McCarthy has that drive but we need someone with more technical nous. Stones' injury has affected us as he was so much more comfortable on the ball bringing it into midfield whereas Distin hoofs it. This is essential to link up defence and attack because otherwise all our attacks go down the flanks and they're prepared against that. which leads to

Known Quality

With the exception of Eto'o and Besic (Atsu barely played) the squad is the same as last year. People know what to expect - continental style, heavy use of full backs, one up front. West Ham, Swansea Hull, they plant two banks of 4 as people have said and say 'come and have a go' and play on the counter. This is difficult for even Chelsea as Sunderland made evident. We have a proven goal scorer who's deadly in the air and running with the ball but often he receives very poor service. We've actually looked very good on the counter and I'm surprised we've not incorporated our tactics in Europa into the league.

Mistakes

Every time we're building a head of steam, players make a silly mistake and you can tell it knocks confident. Howard and Distin especially put themselves under pressure taking too long to play it out the back.

Expectation

We had a fantastic season last season, but Chelsea were in transition, Spurs were Spurs and United were finding out that Ferguson was working wonders in his last years. This year everyone has strengthened, as have all the teams below the top 7 - West Ham, Swansea, Newcastle, Soton have all bought very well. Because we did so well last year and played really nice football people are going to instantly question when we can't do it again. This happened as well under Moyes at the start of many seasons.

The team line up has been imbalanced due to missing a natural left sided midfielder. We have seen at times Barklay occupying that role. Our game appears a lot narrower this season as a result of this. The return of Piennar will help and his partnership with Baines on the left will surely help Baines to get forward a lot easier and get into areas where he can create.
Also, there are a number of players who have received injuries this season and have not quite recovered their match sharpness, but this will come in time. Baines, Coleman, Mirallas, Barclay, Barry. They were key to our success last season but this season have all had set backs with injury so far this season and have all not yet emulated their consistency of last season.

I remember pretty much every game from last season. It was a fantastic season.
This is what's changed.
And it's why everyone is so angry.

I don't just think its that teams park the bus. They did that last season too. I think they play a high line and press whenever it goes to anyone but Distin and we don't have the ability or movement to pass through them. If we do we aren't ruthless enough and that then allows them to drop back and park the bus.

Last season when teams where parking the bus we where able to deal with that although at times it needed Del.

This tactic shift and a general fatigue and lazyness due to injuries WC or whatever and we're not good enough in attack and always likely to make a mistake that will lead to a goal due to how we play.

The thing I don't understand is why hasn't Martinez sorted this problem by now and why did we not buy a left winger.

Keeper and defence are looking nervous, Barry, mccarthy and naismith all injured at one point or another, playing with one winger instead of two. Barkley not firing yet and Martinez has no plan B.

As for the solution, try bringing in Schar from Basel to replace Distin, and Ayew to replace Pienaar. No need for drastic changes just tweeks here an there.

We should practice set pieces

Corners are a complete waste of time now.

In another thread we are lamenting the lack of atmosphere at Goodison these days.

It used to be an Everton corner brought the whole ground to life in anticipating if a first class delivery and an aerial duel ensuing.

Not now.

Most of us pop out the rest room when a corner is being lined up (n)

If anyone thinks Everton will spend money in January they better forget it there is no money , all this talk that we do
not have to sell players because we are now solvent is a load of you know what .

The only way we will get players in January is either by loans or selling one of our best players.
