What makes a big club ?

Champions League football and the ability to attract the biggest names in world football.

The sun's got to him in Barbados, he's always good for a ****ish quote is old Dave.

I'm surprised he didn't say he thought that Real Madrid would be interested in his relegation hero manager.

As for big club, post '93, it's all about the money, nouveau riche clubs like Chelsea & City, becoming 'world footballing powers' due to a massive cheque book. The 'plastic flag' generation of clubs, who are now perceived as massive.

Historically, it was down to fanbase & heritage, still is to an extent, but the Wonga wins...

That quote from Whelan really rattled a few cages, how many big club threads do we need?

Think he was trying to raise Martinez's profile a bit so he could get more money out it or even get someone like Malaga to take an interest.

I'd say over 100 years old, over 30ish major trophies and a following of over around 200,000 people.

The main things are:

Success throughout history
Success in recent times
Fanbase
How well you are known globally
Home crowds
Away crowds
Wealth
Stadium

In England there is only one club that stands above the rest in every single one of those and that is Man United. Clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool have most of them but Liverpool are without a title since 1990 and Arsenal haven't won anything for about 8/9 years. Then there is the likes of Chelsea and Man City who also have a lot of those but are without the success pre-takeover. Clubs like Villa and Everton have a proud history and have been pretty much ever presents in the top flight. Spurs are a good cup team, have a big fanbase and have done well recently, but only have 2 titles. The remaining big clubs in the Premier League are the likes of Sunderland and Newcastle who have won **** all for ages but have big fanbases purely because they are one club cities and are isolated up in the North East. West Ham are probably the last of the big clubs in the top flight due to being a London team with a lot of celebrity fans and high profile players in the past. They haven't won a title though.

Outside of the top flight you have got Leeds who are in the same category as Newcastle and Sunderland for me and then a bit behind them is Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest. Other than possibly Wolves I wouldn't class any of the other sides in England as particularly big.

That's my take on it anyway.

I think if you listed who you think are big clubs in the premier league and then find what they have in common then their is your answer:

Big clubs

Everton
Man Utd
Man ****e
The ****e
Spuds
Sunderland
Newcastle
Chelski
Villa

And what do they have in common? **** all!!!!
There's my theory out the window but they would probably be the teams that I would perceive to be big in the prem....
