Am I alone in regretting the passing of the era of friendly merseyside derbies? Seems to me that, as the game has changed in the last ten years or so, we've lost a lot of the humour and warmth between the two sets of fans.
The well publicised incidents of last Sunday are not new, they continue a trend that has been happening for some years.
I'm ashamed of the stuff that blue fans were chanting about Gerrard - just as I was disgusted at what happened to Neville and Lescott. Neither of these incidents are worthy of the history of this fixture.
I've said before on this site that the two clubs will miss each other when we move. I've thought it's brilliant that the two clubs are so close in the city and that families (like mine) are split blue/red.
But since Sunday I've been thinking maybe that's all changing/changed and that perhaps we'll be better of a few miles away.
1984 - Milk cup Final. I was on the top deck of a bus and saw women dressed half blue/half red (including the umbrellas). We all sat intermingled and got passionate about our team, to be sure, but without rancour.
(Melancholy sigh) Am I being too traditionalist or nostalgic? Should we be advocating some action by either club? Could we start a movement for decent merseyside fans. (Takes tablet and lies in darkened room)
