What can we still achieve this year?

So this season has been fecking awful but given that we've had as many good games as terrible ones recently, lets hope we're going to do one of Moyes' trademark too-late-to-actually-matter end of season runs.

But what do we have left to play for?

We've already blown our chances of doing a double over the RS, of winning a trophy and of finishing top four: the three things that I really wanted from this season.

Top 6 and a Europa League place isn't entirely impossible, given that we're four points behind with a game in hand but, honestly, I can't bring myself to be excited about that given that if we do make it, we'll just get utterly embarrassed as soon as we play a team from a country we've actually heard of.

No, for me, there's only one possible way to slightly salvage an utterly awful year. And that's finishing above the kopites. Something that I really really want given we've only done it once since we last won in the league (when I was three months old). We're only three points behind now so lets compare run-ins.

Good Guys:

Home vs Birmingham.
Home vs Fulham.
Home vs Villa.
Away vs Wolves.
Home vs Blackburn.
Away vs Man U.
Away vs Wigan.
Home vs Man City.
Away vs West Brom.
Home vs Chelsea.

Kopites:

Home vs Man U.
Away vs Sunderland.
Away vs West Brom.
Home vs Man City.
Away vs Arsenal.
Home vs Birmingham.
Home vs Newcastle.
Away vs Fulham.
Home vs Spurs.
Away vs Villa.

Am I just deluding myself to recover from the pain of the Reading match or do we actually have a decent chance here?

If Utd/Arsenal or City win the FA cup wont that free up 6th position??

Spurs upwards are too far ahead - 6th would be a miracle

7th 8th or 9th is realistic TBH.....

So are they, though.

You can't rule Bolton out of it lid either, Coyle has built a good team there.

I still think there is more chance of Liverpool qualifying that us, they are a wee bit more consistent whereas we seem two missed chances away from implosion. If Fellaini was fit I'd be a bit more confident.

Hope I'm wrong like.

Top half is about all we can muster. Europe will be beyond us. If we can muster 15-20 points from those remaining games we'll have done extremely well. But i doubt it will be enough for top 6.

We just need to take it one game at a time. It was doom, gloom and relegation battles this morning, one win and we're suddenly talking Europe. Expectations are dashed all too readily by this team.

The next three home games will tell us a lot about the capability of this team.

What happens if dare I say it the RS or City win the Europa ???

Depends what their current league standing was, if they had already qualified for Europe, which in City's case is more than likely, You'd imagine the league would be awarded the extra place. Interesting thought.

Like I said in the post, I don't really care if we qualify for the Europa since we never do well in it anyway. I just want finish above the RS.

If Bolton finish 6th and we finish 9th and Liverpool finish 10th that would do me.

I'm not talking Europe, man. I'm talking petty local rivalries.

Petty local rivalries aside, i'd much rather focus on the bigger picture at this moment in time.

If we're a couple of points either side of them by the time the City game rolls around, by all means start talking it up. With more than a quarter of the season to go, its foolish to discuss things that ultimately don't matter.

We've got nothing else left, mate.

The bigger picture is this was our big year and we can't make the top 4, we haven't won a trophy and we've got no money so we can only expect midtable mediocrity for the forseable future.

Forgive me if I'd rather concentrate on our rivalry with the Kopites. Like I said, finishing above them is the only thing remotely of note that we can still acomplish.

Confidence is worth such a lot in football and I believe we are gaining in confidence; I can see a great finish to the season and yes we will finish above Liverpool.

We'll finish 7th-9th. I've maintained that for the past three months. A hopeless effort and a dismal season.

The only thing left in terms of interest is to hope United win the title and Liverpool fail in the Uefa Cup...hopefully before they reach the final.

Finishing above Liverpool is neither here nor there. They are a talked up mid division side no longer a yardstick for achievement.

If you assume 2 points at home and 1 away is par return and anything above is better and anything below is worse then we are currently only 2 points off the RS and Bolton in 6th. Of course it is possible to pass both of them. We can and we should. Top 6 is an achievement of sorts no matter where the spoilt brats are.
