Had this the other week with my lad. My lad was going on about the work he does defensively, his work rate etc. I didn’t reply and just shook my head.

It's one of those things a giant chunk of people do where a player is obviously crap, so they basically fill in the gap between that and "this player is permanently etched into the lineup" by assuming the player is especially good at something like defending or positioning. It becomes useful to flag people who don't really know what they're watching but believe themselves knowledgeable because they repeat something commentators (or a group of Internet commenters somewhere) said.
