We're gutted to lose Klaassen

True, I just think it's a bit crazy. I couldn't imagine a modern person in Austria thinking that anyone from Serbia was essentially Austrian. I definitely couldn't imagine them believing that "the Serbs just want to be Austrian anyway"...

Regardless if a British person claims Irish people as being British then they should also be claiming people from the US, half the Carribbean, Sudan, Lesotho, Benin, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Somalia, Nigeria, Zambia, Malawi, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait etc etc.

It's ludicrous and shows a complete ignorance to history, but then again a lot of my mates from the UK do say that very little of this is taught in schools - specifically the history between Ireland and the British Empire.
I don't think most English are arsed to be honest mate.

Oh I don't doubt that, just don't understand why "not being arsed" results in schools not teaching about certain things. Our history classes when we're kids aren't exactly robust but we do still learn about British history and not many Irish care about 1066.

The Irish are basically British anyway. They're just in denial.
Only joking!

Er, we're veering someway off topic here fellas and on the back of this comment, the discussion is in danger of heading in a direction we'd far rather it didn't.

Let's stick to footie in general, and in this thread... Davy Klaassen.

Thank you.

While it is not for me to comment on the educational attachments of English people I do know what you mean.

Afternoon Blues,

An English Ajax supporter here. Yes, Englishman following a Dutch club. My auntie and uncle moved to Amsterdam when I was 12 and took me to my first game in 2002 vs Den Bosch. It was my later teens/early twenties when I really fell in love with the beautiful club from Amsterdam.

I'm absolutely gutted about losing Davy Klaassen to you guys but he's gone to a great club rather than just for the cash tinted glasses. I think under Koeman will be the making of him in the Premier League.

I'm part of the only English Ajax website on the net and one of our writers has put a piece together for you guys on what exactly you can expect from your new signing. Hope you like it, let me know your thoughts.

All the best for next season, I'll be following you guys and Davy!

If we taught our kids about every nation the British empire was mean to we wouldn't have time to teach them about anything else. The simple reality is that the impact that the English-Irish relationship has had on the shaping of modern Britain is more limited than relationships with America and the major European nations and so it is not really a major plank of history teaching. History is either inward looking or global and Irish - English politics doesn't get a look in.

My school did mate.

I think you're forgetting that there are large swathes of the population who are just a bit thick.

And not arsed.

Klaassen has crap hair but looks boss at togger.

NO!!
!
Ireland was defo still British when he played, even if people like to think its not now!

Good lord!

I have just been reading some of the posts on this thread with alarm. MG this is bewildering

Ireland has been an independent state since 1922 and an independent republic since the adoption of the Bunreacht in 1937.

I knew Peter Farrell - see my avatar. He was a proud Evertonian and a proud Irishman.

I am delighted to see Klaassen joining but maybe Schneiderlin should be captain ahead of him if Jags is not to keep the armband.

Davy Klassen and Phil Jagielka should come to Drogheda on the banks of the Boyne and fight for the captaincy of Everton. They could do it on July 12th just to get it sorted before preseason on July 13th....
